Plenty of this, Vodka and red bull, 'Hulks' (alcopop+double vodka/redbull - it goes green if you use a blue coloured WKD/VHF etc) a good portion of other students ad infinitum.

3) You contacted your network provider to bar your phone/sim
4) Having barred your phone with them, you wonder if they can actually bar your phone.

What is rooting and ROMing? Does that affect the built in safety measures all phones have?

Any network provider should be able to bar your phone on the hardware level - that's the built in safety measure. If you haven't done something odd to change this, then it should be barred fine. No doubt if it's picked up by a less-than-scrupulous person there are ways around it, enabling them to sell your phone.

It's an Android so rooting lets you gain 'full control' and ROM'ing basically lets you stick a completely new (Android) OS on there, so to speak. But yeah it's Orange's own phone, but I've unlocked it to use with GiffGaff and I've barred both the phone and sim from their website - i was just wondering if this would still be effective given it's been unlocked and so on.

Just to add to this, what does barring do exactly as my Gmail account is synced to my phone, i don't want every man and his dog snooping through my mail :/

Barring just blocks it from making calls/texts. Unless you have a pin/lock on the phone it is still fully accessable (spelt right?) by anyone who finds it.

Change your passwords asap for any apps on your phone eg gmail/facebook/twitter/etc

You should be ok then, I use the pattern screen lock so even if mine is turned off you need to enter pin for the SIM then the screen unlock pattern before you can get into it. Even if someone booted to recovery & flashed a new ROM I think the lock remains (at least mine did) unless they wipe the user data in which case you're still safe.
Don't quote me on that though!

I'm not an expert and don't know about normal gmail stuff, but I sync my google calender and there's a page I can go to to control all the sync stuff. Maybe just change your password?

Suppose i may as well, i just don't know if that will effect my auto updates to my phone (can't see it).

The quicker the battery runs out on it the better

Do you not have any apps that allow you to locate the phone and/or remote wipe?

(I'm guessing not, otherwise you'd have done it already)
