My name Chalfag refers to the character Harry Lime played by Orson Welles in the film "The Third Man".

If you have not seen said film then I suggest you do post haste!

Quote from "The Third Man" by Harry Lime :
"You know what the fellow said – in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace – and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

I'm afraid, Harry, that black and white films do not do it for me. I mean, sure, you can get an HD of a B&W, but what's the point?

Anyway Orson Welles was a terrible actor and overweight to boot. The only good show he ever did was Pinky and the Brain.

Sorry I just cannot agree with the general sentiment that "things were better before we had technology". They weren't, they were pretty rubbish if you ask me. No rose tinted glasses here, yes life was simpler, but it was also pretty boring.
The world was a horrible unforgiving place without technology granted. However if science fiction has taught us anything it's that technology may one day make it even worse.

You have to admit Orson Welles was pretty talented. Such as having the ability to the do the voice acting in a cartoon from beyond the grave.

It might do. But then again it might end up far far better than it's ever been. Who knows.

I'm willing to put a very large bet on the world getting worse and worse and worse. I think people in the western world right now are probably as close to being in an utopia as the human race will ever be in. Won't be long before we lose net neutrality and this beautiful thing we had called the internet just disappears.

Also I'm not sure how much more we can invest ourselves in consumerism and still have souls.

What is skyplummeting? If it's moose starts at point A in the sky and ends at point B on the ground, how can they practice it more than once?

How uncouth and completely uncalled for. I am used to being called stupid by my friends, family, lecturers and partner, but to be decreed a moron by someone who I don't even know is quite distressing.

Anyway, I do agree with some of your comments, I do hope that information screening won't become worse in the future. As far as technology is concerned I doubt we have anything to fear, since it seems to stupify people to the point that they are unable to function reasonably in the evening unless some soporific soap is churning out it's emotional propaganda in an entirely unrealistic fashion. In that sense people are becoming less of a threat to society.

Science fiction has taught me that one day we will all have personal jet packs, fly through space and have light sabers! How is that a bad thing?

I wonder if people say the same of me when I read Hexus on my rss reader on my Galaxy S?
