A very surreal experience I had in the US last year was brought back to me after a phone call with my parents this weekend.
They live in the US, and when I went to visit them I took the opportunity to visit the cinema a few times to see LOTR part 3 amongst other things, and the audience laughed at the obviously funny bits but might have missed some of the more subtle humour... what got me though was that at the end credits they applaud the film?
Whose benefit is this for?
I thought it might be a one-off, but every film I saw over there had the same result. Bizarre!
What my parents said this weekend is that it's got even worse - now they actually applaud some of the actions of characters in the film when they feel justice has been served.
*** SPOILER ABOUT TROY WARNING ***
They saw Troy, and applause with cheering came about when Hector killed Ajax and when his cousin killed Agamemnon.
*boggle*
Has this trait spread to the UK, or anywhere in Europe for that matter?

. Still, nobody else in the audience complained, I saved them from watching the whole film in SkinnyVision
