What to do when you get a nose bleed

Just discussing with Luke how to best cure a nose bleed on MSN after he just got one, so i googled for whether it best to tip head back or forward.

9th in the list on google was this stunning result...

Any of you suffering from a nose bleed should follow this one without a doubt...

"Best way to do ti is to chop your head off. You'll have a neck bleed, but the nosebleed will stop for good. If you happen to be using your head at the time, and chopping it off is not such a good idea, try a finger up the bleeding nostril... or two fingers if you have a double nosebleed. You'll look a bit strange and your voice will sound funny, but blood won't drop on your t-shirt anymore. "

    talk about superb.......

I get them frequently (well, fairly) and they're a pain in the ass.

I just tilt my head back a bit so the blood doesn't drip right out and wait for it to congeal. If I'm at home, I go to the bathroom, tilt my head back and hold a cold wet cloth on the bridge of my nose.

tiltin yer head back is really the wrong thing to do... cos then the blood will run out the back of your nose and down your throat, where you run the risk of choking. you have to pinch you nose where the two bony bits meet and only slightly tip yer head forward to stop the blood backing up down you throat and wait for it to stop...

i usually sneeze into a tissue to clear any blood clots that are there and then it tends not to drip, and stops bleeding in about 30 seconds. don't know if there is any medical reason for this but it's worked for me since i was in primary school when i used to get nosebleeds every other day.

It's different for everyone... as most things I get nose bleeds once in a while, but it's not often these days...

From what I know you shouldn't tilt your head, just keep your head upright and use some paper or whatever so you don't spoil your clothes. Never tried cutting my head off, I'll let you know if I ever do

I get that a couple of times a month.. Well, I think it's because I can't eat so much, I've a hard time eating. Well, I usually take a tissue and pull my head back for a while..and it usually stops! One day I woke up and my bed was covered with blood..:/

You get nosebleeds because there's a point in the inside of your nose where 3 arteries join together, and it tends to be very thin walled around that area, all of which adds up to risk of nosebleeds.

Logically, the best way to sort one out I guess is to pinch on the bridge of your nose (to stop the bleeding and allow it to clot a bit, and form like a basic scab) and then it should heal by itself. As to tilting your head back, I don't think it makes a lot of difference. If it doesn't stop for ages, bung some tissue up there, that should stop it. If it relly wont stop no matter what you do to it, you can go to casualty where they will (don't laugh) stick a nasal tampon up your nose, which will definitely do the job.

ice cubes work... on the bridge of the nose and sucking em also helps.

But has ab1385 said they do stick a nasal tampon up there if its a severe bleed. This hurts like f*** when there removed, i had a 33 year old man cry when i took his out and another (bloke ) threatened to report me to his consultant!!

haha, now that you mention it, i've had one of those up my nose before. i went into hospital for a 1day operation to have a pollip remove that grew where i had had my adinoids out. i went in, they put me to sleep and i woke up with a sponge thing rammed up my nostril. freaked the hell out of me.

i waited there, coming round from the operation, and then the doctor turned up with a bowl and said they were gonna take the "bung" (i refuse to call it a tampon) out of my nose, i held the bowl under my chin, he warned me there was gonna be a fair amount of blood that would still come out. But what the git didnt warn me about was the fact that the thing they'd plugged up my nose was actually about 10cm long. he didnt lie about the blood either.

felt so damn weird having that taken out.

If you have a nosebleed, you should seriously find the nearest body-hugging white vest, put it on, and bleed allover it.

Instantly, this will cause people to think you're the hardest git this side of the Thames.

I really hate it in films and programmes when they always tilt their heads back when they get a nosebleed. No wonder so many people think its the right way. You end up swallowing blood and then vomitting!
Bridge of the nose, head forward!
