Grrrrrrr Digital camera annoyance

Right - this is how I use MY camera (Fuji 2800Z)

No software.

All that 3rd rate memory hogging supposedly-easy-to-use junk that comes on CD .... stays in the sealed bag.

I plug the camera into my PC

*Bing*

My Computer / Removeable Storage Device / All photos displayed as thumbnails, simply select the one I want and open with photoshop if required.

Lovely :)



SO WHY when I plug a Canon A70 into my Sisters laptop can I not view it in My Computer !?!

Nothing - Nada.

The only bloody way I can view the picture on the camera is to go into the lousy slow-loading photo software thats packaged in the box.

Why the hell doesn't it appear as a removeable storage device in my computer !?!

Stupid question, is her laptop XP? If its 98 it might need usb mass storage drivers, had a similar thing with one of my cameras.

Nah its Windows 2000, but it has no trouble picking up my Fuji as a removeable storage device :inquisiti

Sounds like an attack of crap design.

My wee matchbox camera has the same problem... however.. if I just install the driver for the camera, I can use it as an import device through photoshop. A little fiddly, but at least I don't have to use the crappy Ulead rubbish to get me photos.

Windows does it just fine thankyou very much - much faster and much simpler.

have you had a look on the web site or driverguide.com... why don't you try her cam on you windows xp computer and see, if it's a 2000 issue???? worth a try mate

Are they running on different memory cards...could that be the problem? I know my Sony MemoryStick is recognised without drivers so maybe its all down to the type of storage??

The first digital camera I got, a Canon one, appeared instantly as a removable disk when I hooked it up and I could happily drag & drop files to and fro.

The Minolta one I got later insisted that it needed a driver installing for Windows to be able to talk to the device, and whenever it is NOT connected and I start up Windows, I get errors in my event log about a missing device.

This annoyed me, so I got a 7-in-1 card reader for about $25 and now I can just take the memory cards out of either camera and read them directly - much easier :)
Plus I don't get the silly cable mixed up, they look very similar but are completely incompatible.

it's coz it's a canon - my canon a300 is the same.

So the only way to access the photos is either by getting a card-reader, or using the software ?

card readers are well cheap on ebuyer, worth the money as you can get the 5 in one jobbies

the canon a40 i had just needed a driver installing ,not unusual and qute obvious when you think about it ;)

install the driver Skii ,sod the software u just need the driver to see it as a removable drive

oh and a quick http://www.vapochill.eclipse.co.uk/emotes/rtfm.gif wouldnt have hurt either :p

I have m8, I've used cameras on Win2k before and you almost always need the camera driver.

If it was a driver issue it would say 'unknown device' or 'device not recognised', the problem is that it is detected but only accessible through the poxy imaging software.

use photoshop then Skii... all you have to do is "import" the images through the file menu.. it comes up in thumbnails.. open any u like and you should be able to delete images off there too...

Sounds sneaky... I'm thinking of getting a Canon Ixus i now, anyone know if it works the same way? I would prolly like to access it from linux aswell so I really hope it isn't a complicated device to access... But then I could always just get a card reader if it becomes an issue I guess... Would be nice to know that before I get it though.

just looked and it appears there is only a twain driver for win2k so yea it will only work thru software :( ,best thing todo is find some software that u can get on with ,plenty about to choose from

Well with my Canon EOS 300D the manual told me to intall the software first so I did. I only installed the WIA driver and the Zoom browser thing. I didnt realise that XP might recognise it without the Zoom browser thingy. Ill try that first next time.
Importing into PS is fine if you only want a few photos but it is annoying if all you want to do is save them to disk. The Zoom browser thing will save the whole lot for you although I presume that could also be easily acheived if it was recognised as a mass storage device.

AS for Linux I was impressed by how easily it was to access the photos. I am using Fedora 1 and it has a little camera applet and all I had to do wasplug the camerea in and select the correct camera from a list and bingo :) . It was a matter of a few seconds.
Still it seemed to take just as long to transfer photos as it did in XP. That is a long time for 512MB data on USB 1 :(

Yup, I had the same thing with my canon, easiest way is to just get a card-reader, it's quicker too, especially if you get a usb2 one :)

aye unfortunately. the EPIA MII's have built in compact flash readers if you fancy changing your pc :)

k, I'll add a nice card-reader to my shopping cart then. Can't go wrong if I get one of those :)
