Went on holiday to Scratby just outside Great Yarmouth, and while there a woman reversed her mondeo off a cliff with two dogs in the back. i took a photo, journalist turned up, had it off me (the photo that is) had a phone call from some pic selling people, and now its in the Sun, the mail, bbc news site etc.

You should be getting a packet. A snap like that would cost the national papers £200 for every usage.

So say seven papers, that's £1400. Just make sure the journo/agency you sold it to doesn't rip you off.

To be fair, I don't think many photographers (of any standard) on most forums consider selling their photos outside of a little Flickr site, and some even go as far to say they don't want to sell them, so releasing it and just getting what you get is pretty much a given.

Had it been an exclusive view of a major story it might have been different... but while it looks pretty exclusive, it's fair to say it's not a major story (with all due respect). Given the article, I doubt it was a particularly comfortable stance you had though!

Well done to you, nice result keep it up maybe you will spot a 'celebrity' hanging over a cliff edge in their car next time... (wishful thinking in some cases). Also knocking my kitchen apart currently, good luck with yours. Still trying to fathom why B&Q will deliver you an online order of tiddly cupboard handles I can go pick up myself (as a non-driver) and not heavy boxes of tiles which I can't..

As a journalist, and a photographer, I'll say again .....

If a commercial organisation of any type, most definitely including the media, wants to use either my work or my photos, I expect (and will) get paid for it. Moreover, I'm very specific about what rights they buy when they buy. The more rights they want, the more it costs them, or I walk away.

What I'll charge for a photo varies, both according to what it is of, and who it is buying it, as well as what rights they want.

"... just getting what you get is pretty much a given"? That's the attitude that publishers love. Publishers would absolutely love for that to be true. But among photographers with any sense, it certainly isn't true, and anyone that just accepts that is very likely being had over. And, at the same time, making it harder for the rest of us. Publishers are, and have for some years, been involved in what boils down to a rights grab. Which is why, under no circumstances would I accept that statement and will walk away rather than get walked over.

If they really want a photo, they'll pay for it. If they don't, why give it to them?

Oh, and watch out for competitions, too. That's another way some publishers like to try to grab all rights. Read the entry T&Cs.

Re: anybody seen the photo i took in the media the last couple of days?

Considering selling and being approached are rather different in my eyes in this instance.

I can see where you may have got the wrong end of the stick, but as far as I'm aware, few on most forums I've seen actively go about selling items outside of a link to their own site or page on a popular server.

It wasn't a comment aimed at those who do go selling photos to make money, be they pro or not, and it wasn't aimed at even the OP, more the comment I quoted, where he'd suggested someone who wasn't even trying to sell a photo charges as much as they like (which of course you're free to do, but wasn't in the spirit of the way things had been done).
