Which could pose a problem as you cannot relinquish British citizenship!
I once met a UK national working as a civil servant for the US DoD. He had been told that he had to renounce UK citizenship, but when he approached the Embassy, he was told that it was nt possible. However he ended up swearing allegiance to the President, and that satisfied the US authorities, and didn't particularly concern the Bristish, as "once born a Brit, always a Brit"!
Think you have to be acepted for traning first. However you might look for astate that has a low rate of income tax. IIRC Florida is one.
As for watching movies in your spare time, if the US training is anything like UK, you wont have much spare time during your basic training.

You can. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/br...upcitizenship/
Not many people do, because there are only a few reasons to. US citizenship is more of a burden to an expat, as a US Citizen must still file and pay taxes on overseas income.
no, not seen it , I dont know how many soldiers injured feel the same , its pretty big deal to suddenly be disabled or whatever , after taking for granted all the things you can do now, not just physically but in terms of, " normal " things like dating going wherever you want / when you want etc etc
Consider how great it would be in retrospect for that to happen within a month of being assigned somewhere, then have the next 50 or whatever yrs of life living like that like some of the Nam Vets in the US or others from Iraq.
I know why you like the idea of it, but there are others ways to achieve that feeling you seek- unless you want to kill another human of course which doesnt appeal me - though I admit Ive felt like it sometimes .

It is I have been there twice, front line stuff though is different. You would be surprised to know how little we get up to.
Just bumping this to let you know that there's a new series on tonight, Channel 5 @ 9pm, called "Royal Marines : Mission Afghanistan". Haven't seen any trailers, so no idea if it'll be any good. I suppose one thing to remember when trying to gauge what it's like out there from TV shows is that the MoD will censor the worst of it in case it hampers recruitment drastically.
99.9% need not apply !
If anything on the TV puts you off, you were never good enough, not even close !
I look forward to watching that series. The Royal Marines are the reason I was born in Singapore !
Who said it was for basic? you only get like an hour free time...

Pancake, Blitzen.
Please be aware that Personal Attacks are not tolerated on this forum. This is your first and final warning on this subject. Next one will be an instant weeks ban.
Please keep it on topic and informational, even though you clearly disagree with each other but refrain from the personal attacks.
What Pancake does, or doesn't choose to do is up to him, we can merely provide the advice. He'll have to learn the hard way, as we all do.

At no point have i personally attacked him. The only time i got close was a few pages away and an ADMIN stated i was well within the boundaries.
I couldnt care a less what Pancake has to say,but the way he is making light and almost taking the mick out of the Armed Forces is disgraceful, and I wont just sit here and ignore his drivel.
Ifyou cant see the bloke is deliberately trying to make a mockery of the armed services, as blatant as it is, then i am not overly concerned about being a member here anyway.
I'm not sure that the OP is deliberately mocking the UK armed forces so much as having a very naive and immature view of military life, judging by his comments here.
If his opinions here do reflect his true view, I doubt that he would be accepted for traing in any UK military service. I cannot comment on the US acceptance criteria as I have no direct experience of them.
That said, if he does apply, I wish him every success, and if he is successful, I hope that the discipline and reality of military life is not too much of a shock.

@peterb Can you please point out where i have had a "naive and immature view of military life"?
@Blitzen just drop it, when did i mock the armed forces? point it out in the thread please.
Thanks
Just waiting for my education to be approved now, because i got all my education here so its not the same. It should be though. Id like to think i was pretty clever xD
Pancake when someone is ignorant of something which matters as much to those who have served their country as you regretably appear to come across it genuinely worries some people and upsets them.
The phsycology of people who have served in the armed forces is really quite fascinating, as someone pointed not so long ago the current suicide rate of infantry who've seen combat in Iraq/Afgan is significantly high when compared to just those in the forces.
It is not something to be taken lightly.
Some of the anger is their love for their comrads, some is their hopes that you won't suffer what they fear you will.
However you don't appear to come across excepting or understanding of this, this is a worrying trait for anyone going near the forces.
For me I found it odd how you described choppers as cool, yet showed no understanding or aptitude of what it takes to fly one, as a result I might have unfairly written you off as having no hope of ever getting near the cockpit, but when you fail to head the advice and warning of people who've served, people who like me grew up in the milarty and am almost something of a pahria to have not served (compared to my old school friends) it is very sad.
