Thumbs down Cap-a-rama......BT makes interesting decision...

BT has just announced they are to introduce caps to users on thier service, the 512k service will have a 15Gb limit per month and the 1mb will have a 30GB limit per month. This is even worse thatthe attempt by NTL to introduce this. Typical, they say they have to do this when the price cuts come in, yet other companies are doing fine..... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06...oadband_price/ for more info.......

15GB ain't too bad compared to some companies!

Remember the chances are an average household (no geeks/computer obsessed people) wont reach 1GB in a month.

NTL is supposed to have a 1GB cap per day but I've never actually noticed it. Does everyone know if it's actually enforced?

As for BT... I would never use their service every again after the hassle I had with their dial-up service. They chucked me off their service for using it too much, after changing their T&C from unlimited use to max. 18 hours per day, to max. 12 hours per day, to max. 150 hours per month and at the same time increasing the price and providing a crappy service.

In the end I move to Freeserve. £2 cheaper a month, totally unlimited use and a service that I could always connect to first time, even during peak hours.

They live by their brand name alone. They use it to sucker in unsuspecting users and then totally rip them off. I can't decide whether they're evil or just incompetent.

Problem with BT is most people seem to

    a) Not know there are alternatives
    b) Think that it'll be easier because they're dealing with "one company"

As anyone whos ever dealt with BT will know, they're about 8 major companies, with many, many subdivisions...

I don't think they're evil - they just still act as though they're part of the post office (another company who's days are rapidly looking numbered - can you remember the last time you wrote a letter?)
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

Whilst I don't agree with it you can easily see the sense in such a business decision. With around 20% of internet users using 80% of the bandwidth BT is trying to ensure that the vast bulk of its customers receive the optimum level of service. It may annoy heavy bandwidth users but that's a small number of people in the grand scheme of things.

one of the most recently annoying things is that BT wont relay mail from non BT addresses out of their SMTP servers.

this is causing a lot of frustration for my clients who might have an old isp mail address they need , such as freeserve but cant send out as it.

    Really?
Wow, I guess that's some very basic attempt at preventing use as a spam relay?

What if you own your own domain, does it let you do that okay?
Are they just preventing spoofing from other ISPs, or everything non-BT?

I'm on BT broadband and have to say that I find it to be a great service. Tech support is truly 24hours... I rang them up at 2am Monday morning once and was speaking to a knowledgable tech guy straight away.

The actual connection has only once in nearly two years ever been bad... I could still get online but at dial-up speeds only, but even that was sorted within 12 hours.

I don't think that a 30gb cap is actually that restrictive unless you live for torrents!

That said, should I ever hit it, I'll be gutted.... I'll have to have a look in their T+Cs, cos I signed up to a 1mg connection after specifically asking whether or not there was a download cap to which the answer was no.

And if anyone is wondering, I went with BT in the first place as they weren't charging one of those wondeful 'connection fees' that everyone else charges. I can't see why anyone on this earth would want to pay fifty quid or more to get some oik somewhere to flick a switch to then allow that company to start charging you for a service.... it'd be like your supermarket charging you an entrance fee!

Before upgrading my line I had a look around at the competition, but once you added in the connection fee, it's cheaper for the first year for me to stay with BT and seeing as I've never had a trouble with them, why go off and spend money when I don't need too?

not sure , but I've had 5 or 6 clients that have had the identical issue.

I think it varies massivly with which bt product.

one of them doesn't have ANY smtp access ( apparently you are supposed to use webmail only )

    just use maildirect instead

I know that the internet in Australia really is weird, they are capped to the hilt and cactually charge you as soon as you go over, they don't just disconnnect you, but physically charge you per Mb I think....

as for the USA, not sure, never heard of them doing it there, I know when I lived there there was no issue at all with it.

I think this was a very unwise thing for BT to do, especially when AOL have loads of adverts EVERYwhere proclaiming to be unrestricted......
