    Default Google etc to English..

    Hi guys,

Very quick question, as i fly back soon. I am in Italy visiting my parents and have taken it upon myself to bring their laptop up to scratch.

One thing that is really driving me mad is everything defaulting to Italian/the Italian version of the site.

Does anyone know how to stop this? I just want everything to be .com/English version of the site. It is google chrome they are using!

    Cheers guys

do you mean when you type google.com you get re-directed?

or do you mean if you type a search string into the URL bar?

The latter is configured in the preferences under search providers iirc.

Re: Default Google etc to English..

I have tried changing the default search to google.com, google.com/ncr etc etc but whenever you type something into the URL bar it still directs you to google.it

edit: I have also tried updating the txt file in user data from google.it to google.com, but it didnt change anything.

In Firefox, go to about:config and search for general.useragent.locale and set it to en-GB, also search for intl.accept_languages and set it to en-gb, en

Then change back to whatever it was when you're done.

Typing it into the URl bar, it still defaults back to .it though! Tried it with .co.uk and .com. I can understand this not being a common problem, but seems daft there isnt a way of setting it.

if you go straight to www.google.com there is normally an option for not using the regional page. In the very bottom right
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)

I'm not sure how Google determines what language to use but it probably consists of browser headers and possibly IP address but the latter shouldn't be enforced - IP-based location tracking isn't completely accurate. Try changing the browser headers as I described above, then clear cookies before trying again.

Re: Default Google etc to English..

Thanks for the help guys, despite all my best efforts the URL bar still directs you to google.it. I have set the home page to google.co.uk, and the default search to google.co.uk. Hopefully between those two my parents will be happy.

Still think its a bit daft it being this complicated!

What does it say next to language on that page I linked?

Maybe you could try re-installing the GB localised version of Firefox?
