Jamaican PM calls for compensation from UK ahead of Prince Harry's visit

Jamaica's prime minister has hinted that Britain might want to pay her country compensation for the "wicked and brutal" years of slavery in the days of Empire as she prepares to host Prince Harry on the latest leg of his Caribbean tour.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...rys-visit.html

It seems that those nations think they were the only race to be subject to slavery, they forget that whites in England were slaves for 1000 years.
"We gained our freedom through the sweat, blood and tears of our ancestors and we are now free." so did the Brits we were slaves aswell, should we seek compensation from the Italians?

I think this topic is somewhat inflammatory (petercook posting inflammatory threads? Never!) and needs to be watched like a hawk.

Valid as it's current news. It is the membership who inflame, the news itself is benign.

But yes, we will be watching, as with any thread. However we have had many a goodly long debate on contentious and controversial subjects without slipping into pettyness and extremist views.

Re: Jamaican PM calls for compensation from UK ahead of Prince Harry's visit

To the OPs point, I would say that whilst slavery cannot be condoned, and what we did in the past was wrong, it is a slippery slope for governments to start apologising for wrongs done long ago. Where do they stop? If we apologise to Jamaica, there are many other countries and peoples we should apologise to for wrongs committed. Then that opens the door for compensation claims.

Its not a case of "what we did in the past was wrong", its "we now consider what we did in the past to have been wrong".

At the time, and for a few thousand years before that, slavery was perfectly normal and accepted practice.

That slaves were mistreated was definitely wrong, but thats down to the owners rather than the practice itself, and should rightly be compensated, preferably with free repatriation.

Of course, the one slightly irksome part is that it is normally portrayed in a single light "white men enslaved the africans", which is true, but ignores the fact that plenty of them were sold in to slavery by neighbouring tribes either as spoils of war or to avoid becoming slaves themselves.

If even a penny gets handed out then it shows how spineless our government is. The whole debacle with India and attempting to force them in to accepting "aid" from us is absolutely laughable, This guy has seen the news and thinks he deserves a slice of our pie...

That is a very good point. As has been said before 'context is everything'.
