Fabric Softener & clothes washing in general

I don't use softener, am I missing a whole world of pleasure?

I just always do the fast wash with regular Daz powder, line dry, no ironing. I rarely roll around in mud.

Don't use softener for towels, the stuff that makes it soft actually makes it repel water which isn't what you want for a towel, or so I was told by a friend who works for a company that imports towels and bedding...

Re: Fabric Softener & clothes washing in general

    Not really, IMHO.

Fabric softeners do, to initial impressions, "soften" clothes, so some will feel better when you first put them on. But IMHO, after you've worn something for a brief period, they soften themselves simply by movement putting some flexibility back into the fibres. In other words, it does little for me beyond the first 5 or 10 minutes.

And, of course, they generally "perfume" your wash at the same time .... if you like a chemical perfume.

And I find softeners a distinct negative on things like towels. It appears to be because they leave a kind of coating behind, and that tend to make fabrics like cotton kind-of water resistant, and certainly less absorbent. And the result, on a bath towel for instance, is that you end up shoving water around on your body rather than drying it off.

So we never use softener on towels, and the result is, they're a bit harder, feel a bit more scratchy, the first time you use them after a wash. And the cheaper the towels you buy, the more noticeable it is. Personally, I'd rather spend the money on decent towels than softener.

Note - you tend to get what you pay for. For quality, my preference is a good Egyptian cotton, or a premium US Pima.

I don't really think you are missing out, however you could try white vinegar- a tablespoon or so. The vinegar smell doesn't come through, it doesn't irritate skin as much as softners tend to for some people, and it doesn't clog up the fibres of towels. The only downside is that it doesn't actively smell like fresh meadows or roses or sea air or whatever fragrance of fabric softner you might choose in the supermarket (but will def be cheaper!)

Maybe a spoon of lemon juice too? I haven't tried it, though.

Re: Fabric Softener & clothes washing in general

the majority of detergents for washing machines these days contain some degree of conditioner and when using a tumble drier fibres get fluffed up anyway.
I have often found the repeated use of extra conditioners leaves a residue on clothes and subsequently the clothes do not retain their original colour etc.
If when washing you do not overload the machine and your clothes will be as fresh as if you had used a conditioner anyhow.
We are coming up to that time of year when things can be dried outside and get that wonderful outdoor fresh air smell.
For people with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis using conditioner is not a good idea either as it can aggravate the conditions, here i would suggest sticking to a non biological powder too.

On that note, washing machine maintenance. We've been using our washing machine for a few years now with no maintenance. Is there something we should do?? I've only cleaned out the powder tray

Best use of a fabric softener is with those non-iron/easy-iron shirts. Putting the softener in the wash, and then drying in a tumble dryer for about 6-9 minutes means you can avoid having to use an iron.

Definitely worth a few pence per wash IMO

amazed no one has mentioned the difference between hard and soft water!

Myself in a very hard water place, I find it makes a difference, with my nice towels I like a small amount of softener followed by a 10 min tumble, then lined dry. That way you get the kind of sweet, sweet drying pleasure only top Egyption cotton can provide.

in the drum m8, and our machines got a clean setting so i just used that, i guess its the same as a boil wash as you could see it got hot in there but the dishwasher does a 65 degC wash so i would think a cotton wash at 60 would do

i cannot believe were talking about this on a pc tech forum..

i must go play BF3 before i feel the need to start waxing body hair

    I said NOT!

You don't use the good towels with massage oil, or on mucus clean up duty and certainly not for shark week mattress protection. I mean that would just be a shame.

If you don't know what I'm on about its because you've not had a good towel before, this is an outrage. You should go to a good store next time sales are on and be willing to pay £40 before sale price for a top end egyption cotton towel.

You will then enjoy a drying comfort you never thought possible, I suggest having the brandy ready encase the emotional discomfort of realising the wasted decades of baths and showers overcomes you with sorrow.

Thread of the month, right here.

On the subject of machine maintenance... make sure your pump filter is clean every so often... don't want money jamming that thing up.

Even cheaper than dishwasher tabs, just chuck a handful of soda crystals in once every other month. That's what three of my repair men have said over the past few years.
