My competition prize (Chillblast Fusion Bladerunner Media PC) arrived Wednesday

I was impressed by the level of communication from Chillblast with emails at every stage from initial confirmation to dispatch. It was reassuring to be kept up to date with progress until the PC arrived.

After opening up the case to check all the cables were firmly seated I plugged in a spare VGA monitor and powered up.

I was a little surprised to see Windows 7 booting up since I had opted for just the basic system with no extras, upgrades or OS. It soon became clear however this was simply an unactivated copy without a keycode, useful to check everything is working but without a code not much use for anything else.

First impressions are that it is a neat compact system. It is reasonable quiet but because there are lots of vents in the case there is nothing to block the noise of the CPU fan, PSU fan and HD which are a little too intrusive for a living room media system. To be fair you can opt for an ultra quiet CPU fan, SSHD, and quieter PSU if a low noise system is what you are aiming for.

The plan at the moment is to take advantage of having a clean empty PC to try out the Consumer Preview version of Windows 8.

Despite being an entry level system it seems faster than my current aging desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 3700+ running Windows XP) so if I can figure out if it is possible to drive dual monitors from the integrated graphics I might bung another HDD in the case, make a choice between Windows 7 and 8, and use it as a replacement.
