I've been testing load balanced vBulletin today (it's more for high availability, but making it robust in load-balance means that it should also work seamlessly for high availability).
The testing has gone OK, so I'm going to trial it on the world now. I'll let you know when it's deployed, after which I'd like people to let me know if they spot anything going wrong.

OK, we're up and running.
There are a couple of caveats.
1. If the "master" jail goes down the forums will become read-only. This is until I refine the approach for filtering requests after which only file-uploads should suffer, which fortunately we don't do very often.
2. If the whole master server goes down the forums disappear altogether, as the true frontend isn't high-availability yet - the layer one step beyond it is. And the database behind all that has been high-availability for a while now.
Hopefully you won't notice the slightest of difference

It would also help a terrible amount of the Internet connection I was on didn't drop every 20 minutes... makes it hard to know whether I've broken something. Hmph.

Well, everything seems to be doing exactly what I wanted, so hooray for me.
We should have a forum upgrade on the way this month too, so look out for that one

Everything seems to be working at this end, I can't really tell if it's faster, though I'm sure I'd notice if it was slower.

*** edit #2 *** when I posted for some reason I wasn't seeing the drop down box with my system specs in my username section to the left, so I went to look on my profile and specs were there and when I returned to the post it was working again.

Everything's working fine for me, thanks for the update.
Having inspected the forum config some more I have now been able to make it so that posting is still possible when the "master" server is taken offline.
