Why? This is his own Wifi, not the church's. Church goers are stealing bandwidth from him. I would suggest he can put what he likes as SSID/forced home page.

If you want to make 2mb/s available to all and sundry, what does it matter who they are? If there are a lot of people using it, their actually speed will reduce anyway, but as it is only 2 hours or so on a Sunday morning, live with it.

Erm, not sure you understand what I'm talking about.... My wifi, my rules, I'm not intercepting information, I'm not adding in an automatic insert in to their facebook profile with some "Pro Gay" propaganda (despite the fact, it would be funny). Just a little reminder that its not the church which is providing this service and why are you even attending it, is it cold outside?

Because, without giving the name away, most people who use it know me, they are clicking as much on the captive portal page EULA that they have been expressly authorised to use it, this is in bold, large friendly letters at the top btw, not hidden away.

So I figure that they must be bored, it's very sad but often people force religion on to their children, its a bigger form of child abuse than teaching them COBOL.

Why not brighten their day a little bit

So you have a captive portal page to play with, but are just asking about what you should put as the SSID?

But was the intention that it should be available to all and sundry?

As I read it (this bit, and I've added the bold) ....

has always been available to any of my guests without them having to bug me for a password or anything else. Or in fact any of my neighbours in-need of some internets,
Providing a facility for your guests or neighbours is very different, in my humble opinion, from a free-for-all for anyone wandering by.

Just because a connection isn't locked down comprehensively doesn't mean it's free for anyone to use, any more than not locking your front door means anyone passing has a right to pop in and take whatever they feel like.

Having said that, perhaps the obvious solution is to lock it down and, pain that it is, give guests and neighbours a guest log-in.

Or, ask the "tolerant" vicar if he could kindly ask the thieving gits in his congregation to show a little Christian morals and stop nicking your bandwidth. Assuming Animus is right about who's using it, then what utter hypocrisy - thieving bandwidth on your way to Church. Presumably, the tolerance-loving vicar won't be so happy to tolerate that hypocrisy.

Re: So I live in the vicinity of this Church....

22 replies and no-one's suggested the obvious yet?

Simply add a clause to the captive portal page's EULA saying that they agree to forfeit their soul if they haven't got your express permission to use the service. Then log some access times, device IDs and websites they visit, and drop in to the church next Sunday to collect your souls

Hehe. But what's the law on collecting minor's souls without the permission of their parents?

Yes yes, your wifi, your rules - never questioned that.
I just disagree that you have to be an ass about it, thinking up ways to offend/embarass people.

Re: So I live in the vicinity of this Church....

what happens if someone does something illegal using your connection? couldn't you be liable for it? what if you neighbor was downloading/uploading torrents, or someone was looking at something potentially worse? you know what some of those so called holy people are alleged to do at times with younger members of the flock

it's one thing to do it for neighbors and people you know, which you could use with a simple password like "password" but another to openly let anyone use it and you don't know them or what they do

If they're old enough to click "Yes" on a EULA they're old enough to have their souls stolen

You could always just stick a password on it and then change the name to something that would hint to what the password is for your friends and neighbours. i.e. "Whats_my_surname"

Sorry, not trying to take you off on a tangent but I think the burden rests with the land on which a property is built rather than the property itself. People are taking out insurance to guard against possible liability.

Being that it's church goers using your wi-fi, are you not concerned that they're probably looking at banned pr0n and therefore putting your freedom in jeopardy. You know how kinky the clergy get, lol !!

Free internet for anyone is asking for trouble... what if they look a child porn? You could end up in hot water, you need to put some restrictions and a captive portal with "agree to these terms" tick box.
