Well, here are some reccomendations of the top of my head..
A day in the life of Ivan Denisovich by Soljeneitzin (or something) , a book about one day in the life or a prisoner in a russian gulag, absolutely fantastic.
SlaughterHouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut (a incredible account of the bombing of Dresden)
The Orwell cannon (1984 (read it and realise that its happenend) , burmese nights, down and out in london in paris (a true story of orwells days homeless in paris and london) and a homage to catalonia are reccomends)

Slaughter house 5 is probably the best of the books there, in my opinion.

well apart from the books mentions above, try reading Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson and I know this isn't fantasy but try nineteen-eighty-four, you won't be sorry for reading that book

Right, forgot to point this out...being a little slow and all:

'Anything Lord of the rings or Hobbit related i am not interested in'

Fantasy like that just ain't my thing.

    ...Its all about the ships

read 1984 if you want a sort of science fiction, it was written in the 1940's and basically gives a bleak picture of the year 1984, this book is amazing, you can tell minority report borrowed idea's from this book.

Another one to read is Microserfs by Douglas Coupland, yes it is computer related but looks at the lives and characters as they struggle to bring down their bosses, very funny read.

Filth by Irvin Welsh - Basically corrupt coppers based in scotland, very good book, on par with his train spotting novel.

To be honest I don't know of many books based around pirates and ships not my thing really.

Not only a bleak picture, but a very accurate one..

Have you read the HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy trilogy?, its pretty light but well worth reading even though its vaguely fantasy-ish.

Im reading this atm (on and off, dont have much time for reading) - really good so far, it reminds me of a chinese art film I saw a few years ago with the same sort of big brother theme to it.

This was my favourite book in school, Ive read it more than twice now it's purtty good.

If you like the dystopian ideas of '1984' let me reccomend Aldous Huxley's 'A Brave New World'. For slightly lighter, but still anti-Wellsian fare, give Issac Asimov's 'The Caves of Steel' a read. While Asimov will be remembered for his laws of robotics, the robots in his stories are really only used to explore human ideas of discrimination and sexuality, and the limitations of human logic.
