I went back in 1997.......only stayed 3 days though so we only ended doin the obvious. Statue of Liberty, World Trade Centre ( RIP ) Central park, Times square etc etc, had a great time even though we stayed in a YMCA building for backpacker type's, West 62nd street I think overlooking Central Park. What we tryed to do was go round all the places where bits of movies where made. Went to quite a few bars, and were pleasently surprised by how friendly people were.....must have been the accent You will have a great time whatever you decide to do.

DON'T look around all gawpy at everything... you'll stick out as a tourist and get pick pocketed in seconds...

DON'T moan about how big/cheap everything is, the locals will think you're backwards.

DON'T be surprised if everyone you meet knows someone who lives near you. Americans take it for granted that 'near' means the same state and they forget that the UK is smaller than most US states. Edinburgh is 'near' London to them.

DON'T order a 'large' of anything. You will die trying to finish it.

DON'T expect to get drunk on their beer. You will, however, get bloated and gassy and be sick just as much... except with more foam.

DO put on an upper class English accent and reluctantly admit to knowing the Queen personally, it will open many doors for you.

DO smile at everyone. All us English are mad.

DO correct their pronounciation of 'Ing-ger-land' and 'Aluminum'. They'll be grateful for it.

DO join in conversations complaining that 'Gas' (petrol) is 39 cents (2p) a gallon and agree whole-heartedly about expensive it is.

DO agree that everything we have over here is so very much smaller than even the tiniest thing over there.... (this includes the basic unit of everything, the atom. A US atom is approximately five feet across and weighs about 40 kilos).

    Hows that lot for starters?

To be honest, if youre under 21 and you're not a big fan of theatre with lots of money, there's not THAT much to experience after you're done with the sightseeing.
Rockefeller centre is a must, try and go ice skating there - and try to take in a basketball game at madison square garden. Also ice skating and the zoo in central park are fun

FAO Swartz is the name of the toystore...

Wonderful place. Been to a lot of cities, and New York blew me away. I've never seen a city on the scale of that place, just avenue after avenue of towering buildings...incredible...

The Metropolitan Museum is worth a visit, as is the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) if they've finished the renovations...

Status of Liberty, but make sure you get down there for no later than 10am (and that's pushing it, 8am is better) otherwise the queues are a nightmare, especially this time of year. It's a nice time too, 'cause you can walk through the parks up the East side of Manhattan to China Town and have some fantastic Dim Sum, but don't expect the staff to be friendly....as always, look for large restaurants with lots of orientals eating there, a sure sign of good food.

Soho is great, especially round Mercer Street....real New York atmosphere ala Hollywood interpretation, like Hell's Kitchen architecture, but with a load of funky stores, restaurants and people.

Times square is fantastic, especially after dark, but as people say, try not to gawp too much and keep your wallet in your front pocket. There are a lot of muggers around, but as long as you're confident and don't do anything stupid, you'll be great.

Visit the WTC site, just to see the scale of it all....took my breath away. Horrible, but incredible.

Empire State is worth a visit, so I'm told, although I never got round to doing it. Especially on a clear day.

I'd love to go back, one of my favourite cities. The energy is just incredible.
