Possible Repair Maybe ???

I recently attended Quakecon 2003 in dallas Texas.
and while i was over there i purchased a C3 Clear case.
which i love to bits,and you can no longer buy them here,as
Tocs has gone now and they were the main seller over here
anyway..
I packed it in a solid case around my clothes to bring it back
only to find when i got home and opend the suit case,there
lied my Smashed Clear case..
American Airlines wont do nothing about it
and neither will my travel insurance

is there anyway i can repair this

Dont travel with AA i have traveld alot and they have been
the worse airline i have ever flown with..
i wont go into all the other problems we had

the only thing i can think of is to use piece of clear acrylic to bolt the 2 sections together, ie. get a square piece of acrylic, place it inside the case over the join and then drill a couple of holes on each side of the join and put some screws though, i'm not sure how effective that would be though.

Why doesnt your insurance cover it though ?, i would have thought it would have.

travel insurance should cover, have a go till they pay up, there probably just cheque book shy

they said valuable items Broken Inside a suite case is not coverd

what about some kind of clear plastic glue? the break looks fairly clean, and the plastic looks quite thick, so some kind of super / plastic glue should do the trick. try going to a crafts shop to see if they've got some... or perhaps B&Q ?

the stupid thing is,i rang them and asked them before i bought the insurance,was my stuff coverd in a suite case,and they said yes...

but now they say its not coverd while in transit...

so what did they think i was gonna do with it
put it inside my case and watch it do nothing

ive decided to take it further and contact there head office

i've got a Tequila Sunrise C3 case in Brand new condition for sale if u're interested.... £100 ex delivery and it's yours...

In future if u're ever doing this take the case's proper box with padding and label "EXTREMELY FRAGILE" in large red on the sides...

You might be able to use epoxy to put it back together.. Generally throwers will completely ignore 'Fragile' labels. Whats travel insurance for if it doesn't cover your luggage?

Unless they told you about the transit issue over the phone, then its reasonable to assume that was included.
Make a big issue that you phone and asked about it (did you mention that you were taking it on a plane ?, if you did that would make there excuse invalid as you told them the conditions that you wanted to know there policy under).

its international cover (USA)
so inless my suite case was waterproof and im a bloody good

Stick with it mate, also phone up trading standards and ask them, it wont take long, and they are very helpfull :)

My tip would be to mention to them that you have been in contact with trading standards.. It shows them you aren't going to go away!

Over the phone is still a verbal contract. They stated that the suitcase was covered... so it is.....

Why would you use a suitcase for other than travelling anyway?

Sounds like they are being tight IMO. Get onto there backs, and dont lie down until you get something. Once you get something, ask for more! Unless they agree to refund the whole (or at least some - depending on your excess) or the cost.

Have you explained that it is basically irrepairable? As it is a clear case?

I was gonna mention the verbal contract dealie. Its like, if I say to someone in my works (sainsbury's) that some taters they will buy will cost £0.99 but they cost £2.50 they will be able to pay the 99p. Verbal contracts are a bitch to prove though.

They made a contract with you, and you didnt break your side of it (IE: you paid your insurance cover), but they have broken thiers. You might be able to take them to the small claims court for it. They wouldnt want that (and I doubt that you would either, unless it was your last resort). But simple threats get simple results.

i dont think it would go as far as small claims.
i spoke to Tesco Customer service's manager today
and she has taken all my details and is going to see
what she can do for me.
i dont know if many of you have seen there little insurance packs that they sell at Tesco.
for those that havent,its basicly instant holiday insurance,ya buy it at the checkout,tell the checkout person when you leave,they put that info in on the till.
and instantly your coverd..
but these little packs your not allowed to open because it has
a policy number inside which you could use if you noted it down.
the ghey thing is.Ya dont know what ya coverd for inless you ring them first,Because ya cant get to the booklet that's sealed inside the packagen..

Yep, be persistant; insurance companies are real bastards and will lie to you get wriggle out of paying a claim. Very sad, but very true.

I think there is a way of repairing it and it doesn't involve bolting on another piece of plastic to it, but it may not look good if not done right... :( Also it probably won't provide sufficient structural strength if you intend to move the case around to LAN meets, etc.

Also, I can only see that it is only possible to hold the long break - this method will not likely to allow you to turn corners...

1) What you need is a long thin piece of wire that you can conduct a large electrical current through - something like those devices people use to cut polystylene blocks.

2) You need to somehow sandwich this wire between the two pieces of your case. It looks like a snap, so the edges will be clean so you don't need to worry about unevenness.

3) Hold the two pieces in the desired position with the wire in between.

4) Attach the necessary electrical wires.

5) Switch on the current and apply pressure on both sides to push the two edges together. As the wire heats up, it should be able to slightly melt the plastic pieces to allow contact and allow the two pieces to join up.

6) Don't over do it! Excess heat will create bubbles in the plastic. Also, if you heat up too much plastic, you'd get an uneven joint.

7) Once the pieces join, switch off the current, but hold newly joint piece in place. And wait...

8) Disconnect the wires, if you haven't done it already. Since the wire and the plastic have cooled, you should be able to extract the wire from the plastic in one piece (hence corners will make this near impossible).

I should put a large disclaimer in this process - I've only seen this done once! And as I said earlier, it doesn't give you the necessary structural strength to allow much movements, but it will hold together...
