Can I take a metal thermos travel mug in hand luggage on a plane?

I'm going away next week and will be flying and then going by train. I was wondering if I can take a metal travel mug in hand luggage as it would be useful for when I'm on the train.

What can / can't I take in hand luggage these days?

As long as you don't have any liquid in it you should be fine.

A metal travel mug will probably be confiscated as it could be crushed which in turn creates a sharp object which could be used as a weapon (Metal cup Chronicles of Riddick anyone! ). Put it in your luggage that locks and goes in the hold then once you get off the other side transfer it back to your hand luggage once you leave the airport.

If you want something for your hand luggage I would suggest an outdoor plastic type mug, get one from the barbecue section in your local supermarket. Once again dont go for the hard melamine type plastic as if it shatters once again it would be sharp and could be used as a weapon. Look for the soft plastic type (same plastic that they make baby cups out of)

If you don't need it on the plane put it in the suitcase. Simple as that really. Sucurity officers all over really love their role in the Security Theatre. Last week I nearly had my bottle of Stoli taken off me by an Egyptian who thought that, as an Englishman, I might be trying to blow up an English plane flying to England, even though the booze was in a sealed plastic bag along with my receipt from my originating airport.

We'd been airside the whole time of course.

And yet, no one ever considers other things that could make perfectly good weapons on a flight.

Belt buckles, belts, pens, pencils and best of all, hands.

Do they really care that much? Bear in mind every drink I've had on a BA flight has been served to me in an aluminium can which is far more crushable than a thermos mug.

McGyver told me it was the mind.

Do I have to check my mind in, would make the flight easier.
