Love the design of the cauldron - and keeping it centre stage instead of putting it up out of the way is a great idea

EDIT: Aaaand it's going to be moved, well it would be hard to use the space with it right in the middle I guess

There were some major laughs, some gasps of wonderment, I'm so glad they got some humour into it. Awesome spectacle - 10/10 without a doubt. The queen and james bond was inspired

Spoiler: "The Queen jumping out of a Helicopter with James Bond"

I don't know about that, but it was pretty spectacular and totally unexpected

I thought Kenneth Branagh as Isambard Kingdom Brunel was especially good, that whole piece was my particular favourite.

Re: Comments on the opening ceremony...

Bloody excellent! Done us all proud. Bean, Bond and the Queen were inspired. Branagh as Brunel was excellent and great selection for lighting the torch as well. Great bit with Sir Tim too, really emphasised where we are because of the internet.

Didn't go in expecting much but that well and truly delivered. 10/10 and a knighthood for Danny Boyle no doubt.

Re: Comments on the opening ceremony...

It was frankly stunning. The timing and technicalities behind something like that boggle the mind. My favourite has to be the cauldron and its lighting - handing over the honour to the next generation was an inspiring nod to the future. But the cauldron itself; proper, proper wow. It looked special when it was lit and was on the deck but when it lifted up, my jaw hit the deck. I wasn't particularly taken by the whole Olympic thing initially but last was seriously impressive.

Re: Comments on the opening ceremony...

The cynic in may may wonder about the reasoning behind including the NHS in the ceremony, considering what is going on in the real world of our countries current troubles. However, I'm quite happy to set that aside due to one single part of the ceremony. The lighting of the torch was a stroke of genius, as it symbolised the true nature of the Olympics...

    1. 205 countries coming together, setting aside all other differences to compete in a sporting event that unites us all
    2. Irrespective of who wins its true purpose is to inspire future generations to take up the mantle of those that have come before and move us ever forward

Plus the part where the 205 individual flaming petals rose up to form one single torch was awe inspiring, and I don't say that very often. So roll on the sport
If Wisdom is the coordination of "knowledge and experience" and its deliberate use to improve well being then how come "Ignorance is bliss"

Re: Comments on the opening ceremony...

Proper cool. Especially the cauldron - symbolically and physically awesome.

Loved the wellies and brollies from the Czechs! (The only times I've been to the CR it has been tipping it down, so there )

Very touching tribute to 7/7 victims just before the athletes came in - brought the whole tempo back down as well which I initially thought was a shame, but it allowed it to build up again through the processions.

My only wish was that they didn't stop at industrialised Britain in terms of the scenery - they did take some of it down I guess, but I would have loved to see wind turbines spring up next and the greeness return as we move into a more environmentally friendly and energy aware Britain.

I thought that was a certainty, was very surprised not to see any turbines.

    It was watchable.....thats all.

If they wanted a true Britain, they shouldve just give 500 teenagers balaclava's and let them tag things then burn them.
(or got 1000 single teenage mums to dance around their Aldis shopping bags)

I thought it was rather impressive stuff. I'm normally very cynical about these things and have absolutely zero interest in the olympics but it was probably the finest opening ceremony I've ever seen. Turning the green fields into the industrial era was absolutely stunning!

Yes, because that has been an everyday achievement in Britain's history for the last 200 years. Too often we are keen to play our achievements down - good to see something to celebrate.

And maybe the spectacle of the games will inspire some of those disaffected teenagers and single Mums.

    ____________

    However, to move on,

One of the things that struck me at the end was seeing the Argentinian team, representing their country in Britain, despite the recent posturing over the Falklands. Maybe sport will help break down barriers.

Re: Comments on the opening ceremony...

I'm the odd one out then as it didn't stir much in me at all, beyond the ladies and gents from the armed forces raising the flag it all felt too much of a mish mash of old England and "look at us we're hip and trendy". Admittedly I missed the beginning, which I'm reliably informed featured most of the things I've said I'd have found more appropriate than Dizee Rascal and texting references.. Maybe I'm being a grouch but most of it felt a bit off tone to me.

How does a girl who's lost her phone find it by using a phone and what does that have to do with being British? Why couldn't we find room for a proper Mini in the budget rather than a BMW? Why make a big deal of the punk era but not muster the testicular fortitude to play "God save the queen"? I hate that track but if you're going to use the Sex Pistols music for an opening ceremony in London (which is kinda like a Pizza Hut displaying an F from the health inspector as good advertising) at least grow a pair... And having a celebration of the NHS on the world stage while the current government is cutting the service to the bone? That just felt wrong.

Maybe I'm odd but my national pride wasn't stirred a great deal like it obviously was for others. I'd be more proud of a country that spends more feeding and housing its troops than it does the Royals, that can look after its economy or one that hadn't erected surface to air missile stations in public places under the pretence of what (and I'm sorry if anyone's offended by this) to me looked like a school play on LSD for the most part.
