    "Choc Ice"...

... unfortunately not the ice-cream kind.

    Emphasis added.

Am I reading this the wrong way, or is this guy saying that it's derogatory to say that someone is white inside?

Maybe I'm being naive but I really don't get what the issue is, other than Ferdinand is an idiot for using Race as a means of insulting someone.

I think thats been missed here with "choc-ice" use and I don't think Rio would be foolish enough to use it if he thought he'd get backlash (inb4 footballers do what they want) in addition to the JT affair - his Twitter is usually quite sound.

We used to call one of my mates a Bounty all the time because he was half-cast and liked Oasis. Everyone found it humorous not only in itself but because of the implications. The bloke quoted sounds like a typical guardian writer who too seemed to give the word an unnecessary amount of hyperbole. Anyone who thinks that doing poorly on purpose to avoid becoming a "choc-ice" doesn't let them avoid being a chump.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

I've always known it to be a coconut...

I don't think he's saying that it's derogatory because it's describing someone as white. It's innately derogatory, in that I've never known someone to be called a coconut and it have even the slightest positive connotation.

    Re: "Choc Ice"...

... but that's the part I don't understand... Let's say someone called Eminem an inverted choc ice... I dont understand why people can deride an insult as being referred to as not being (acting, whatever) as the colour of their skin.

To me, that's the clincher. People should not be judged by the colour of their skin (fairly standard belief in the world)... right? So why is there a furor when someone is described as acting white when they are (physically) black.

The whole things smacks of utter stupidity...

Well, yes. It depends on the assumption that your skin colour has certain implications for your behaviour/character, and that you are betraying your skin colour by engaging in behaviour/having character traits more in common with another skin colour. As for why it's causing a furore... it's a derogatory term that has a basis in skin colour. Whatever the meaning behind it I think that's enough to land you in a whole heap of trouble.

I thought you were saying that Amaechi was being derogatory, which I think is unreasonable.

On a totally separate note, someone I know chatted with him for 30-45 minutes a couple of weeks ago and said he was a thoroughly nice guy.

The keyword is should. But stereotypes are all too common.

Similarly, "banana" and "bruised banana" are known terms that describe orientals who act white and black respectively. I think that it's easy to sense the derogatory tone especially in the later one.

Of course, the terms may is not necessary derogatory, depending on who/how it is used, but often is. It sterns from the belief that one should be proud, and uphold the traditions/characteristic of one's race.
