    Another electronics hero dies... :(

Not a name to trip off the forefront of the memory, but any electronics geek will know his greatest design, the LM555 timer chip. Not just a timer, but the basis of oscillators used in early synthesisers, the Atari, and many early motherboards as the watchdog timer used to hold the CPU reset line low until the power lines have stabilised.

While it may have been replaced in those applications by more sophisticated devices, the LM555 is still available and used for timing and oscillator ccts.

    RIP Hans Camenzind.

Indeed, almost as ubiquitous as the 741 !

I must have used a couple of hundred of them in my time.

RIP, tick, tick, tick, tick ....

    I hadn't even realised.

I feel like I should assemble an astable multivibrator without a 555, just to better appreciate!

It is such a versatile, Multi purpose device even now. Devices like this is what got me interested in electronics way back.

    For example :

I built a morse code callsign generator using one, and a load of 7400 series logic chips. That would have been mid 70s, and I've recently been told that one is still in use even now !!!
