    Friends

    Not the TV program.

Recent events in my life have had me needing the company and advice of a good, trustworthy friend. It's made me look at exactly who I have in my life who can fill that need, and to be honest, it's been surprisingly few, a good number of which live some distance away - not surprising since I've moved quite a bit in the past few years.

Solid friends - those closest to you, the ones you can count on in anything, for anything, and whom you trust fully - are an incredible treasure. A hundred 'acquaintances' or 'casual friends' would be well worth trading for even just one of the closest type.

It had me curious though how many such friends do other people have? Some times it feels as though others have a whole lot more. So how many 'trust-them-entirely' friends do you guys have, and how conscious of them are you in recognising, valuing, and maintaining those friendships?

    Re: Friends

    Hmmmm, interesting question.

Can't say I've got anyone that fits that bill to be honest as I will do anything I can to help anyone but in my experience when they are 'alright Jack' I tend not to hear from them again although being a shift worker makes a social life difficult.

It used to bother me but it does not now.

    Re: Friends

i struggle with trust as a concept
simply because it requires someone else to sacrifice their own life drives for yours which is a strange concept when you actually think about it

im nealry 40 and tbh and corny
my wife is the only person i truely feel has my back
and 1 best mate who is a close second

i have always been a loner though, so i guess thats like a big fecking crowd for me

    Re: Friends

A childhood friend I have known since I was 5, three people I shared a house with at Uni, and a couple of friends where I live - but a lot would depend on circumstances that required their help as to which one I would turn to.

There are other friends from Uni who I would (and have) confided in. I guess it was a time of relative adversity, when we all needed each other's support and varying times, and that is when you learn who your true friends are.

    Re: Friends

I would say 3, in total.

And yes, I'd happily trade thousands of the other bunch for another one of those. I sometimes struggle to see the value of friends who don't come into that category.

    Re: Friends

sometimes.. you need to look the other way.. and if someone who's not a really close friend needs full monty support... you have to give it.

I have done it recently.. and while it takes large chunks out of your soul, it helps other people and a new friendship is created.

But I DO find that close soul friends.. are different people to close financial friends.

that blend is nails hard....not many of those at all.

My profession lends itself to making really good friends. All of my close friends, aside from my GF, are pilots. Most of my other friends are attached to aviation in some way.

    Re: Friends

real friends that would drop almost anything if you needed them to, or the other way round, 3 at the most. I think that most people could count those types of friends on one hand and have change. They don't turn up often. I've got lots of really good friends, but only like I said, 3 that are better than family.

    Re: Friends

3 appears to be the number of choice. I have one lifelong friend that I have known since she was born pretty much, and theres only 3 months between us, so pretty much for always. Another that I met as a teenager and I was his best man at his wedding, and a 3rd that I met a good deal later in life and has been solid support and great company, an old school type that believes in sticking by family and friends regardless.

I am a fairly outgoing type, have no problems meeting and befriending people, but that inner circle, though vastly different people who move in very different circles, will not change as far as I can see.

    Re: Friends

I have one person in my life that I would trust with anything and she's a woman I work with. A lovely person and someone I treasure as a friend.

I tend not to trust people and in spite of that have had two terrible experiences before. I find people in general rather difficult to deal with as I'm quite a literal person - if I say "you can trust me" then YOU CAN TRUST ME. I don't mean "yeah you can trust me, tell me stuff and oops I might tell someone else sorry but hey, no harm done now tell me more".

    Re: Friends

I have a few.... But one betrayed my trust by turning out to be a long term pedo Id known him since 1972 and thought him my "best friend".... Just shows doesnt it !

Apart from that, let me see .... apart from family I reckon I have 6.

These are folk who would drive 300 miles to get me if my car got nicked, folk who know *most* of my life's secrets, folk who trust me to give them a full body massage.

    You know - friends !

    Re: Friends

I have a lot of acquaintances, and a lot of people who i would regard as friends i can enjoy time with, however not a lot of real friends who i truly trust or can rely on in times of need. I would say probably ~5 in total but in reality, i dont think anyone really needs the whole worlds worth of people to bare their heart too and if anything, having just one really close friend is plenty.

I just wished i lived a bit closer too them
