This is a real strange one guys. I live in Crawley (10miles south of gatwick) and this evening I have been hearing what sounds like something from war of the world's going on.
It literally is a serious of bangs (short thunder claps/someone dropped a drum/distant gun fire) then the occasional boom (explosion/grenade etc) ever we real bangs.
It went on for 10-15mins around 10pm and it has me utterly baffled, literally sounds like the background effects you hear in war zones....
Any ideas?
I would think I was going mad re-reading that the morning after, but the girlfriend heard it too. We were both in doors, windows shut and the TV on low. Can't find anything via google
people do have fireworks on days other that nov the 5th you know

Could have been fireworks, but at the time it didnt sound like anything I had heard before! It was also raining and fairly windy at the time!
