How can one upload and place a diagram in a reply to a posting?

I require to place and insert a diagram that I prepared in a posting. The diagram is not located on a specific URL, however it is stored locally on my local machine.
The Hexus “insert image” icon prompt for a “URL” only, and does not allow to upload a file from a directory on a local machine.
Therefore, the question is, how can I include and upload a diagram that I have prepared in a Hexus posting?

You cannot, you may only link an image from a hosting site like Flickr.

Thank you for your replies, but I will have to pass on this occasion, as I do not wish to load the diagram on a different site, to then have to bring it back to the Hexus forum. This defeats the purpose of joining a specific forum in the first place!

No it doesn't, it's the only way to do it on pretty much any forum. You upload to somewhere such as imgur and then copy a link to the image and put it in a post on here.

What is it that you object to with these hosting services?

Hosting images requires storage and backup facilities, these are not cheap and then they require administration to ensure that the hosting services are constantly running which is why forums don't tend to offer this, as far as I'm aware none of the many forums I've joined allow you to upload images directly, every forum I have seen will allow you to link to a photo that's hosted by a service such as Flickr, Imgur, Photobucket or even Facebook and Google+. There are over 175,000 members in this forum, with over 1,000 online right now as I type, the benefits of using this forum outweigh the disadvantage of not being able to display a picture without first finding a service to host the picture for you, and the combined expertise and experience of the members will usually lead to informative and entertaining discussions on most topics of interest.

Imgur is a pretty good service in that you can upload an image without registering your details with them, you can even create an album and link directly to the album, I've been registered with Photobucket since their early days and so tend to use that, I have one public album and the rest of my pictures are all private.

Re: How can one upload and place a diagram in a reply to a posting?

It does feel silly to have to do something on a different site, to then have to bring it back. I wonder if this is because of the lack of storage space on this forum.

I suppose that another option to avoid using any public sites like Flickr, or imgur.com, would be to use ones local internet provider’s own limited web page allocation memory. This would ensure that the picture or diagram does not end up on some unwanted web-site. As long as the source diagram remains on a webpage that one trusts.

Once you have posted your source diagram on hexus, it's effectively 'out there' isn't it - eg I could then take your image from here and put it into my own photobucket, if I wished, as could anybody..

I always use photobucket, just copy and paste the img code in your post and click reply and your image appears. I think 90+% of forums do not have the image uploads and require you to use a third party site. Also with photobucket you can copy and paste your images on an ebay listing which you can have as many as you want plus they will be full size and of a higher quality.

Re: How can one upload and place a diagram in a reply to a posting?

You could always convert your diagram to ascii art...

    Code:
    .... ....MMMM. IMMMM $MMMMMM .. ?MMMM
    .........MMMM IMMMM ~MMMMMM. . ?MMMM
.........MMMM . . IMMMM ,MMMMMM ?MMMM
    .........MMMM..........IMMMM ..MMMMMM........ .....?MMMM.
    .........MMMM .. .. .IMMMM ...MMMMMM... . . ... . ?MMMM
    .........MMMM .... .. IMMMM MMMMMM .. . +MMMM
    .........MMMM . .. IMMMMMMMMMM. . .... . .... ?MMMM
    .........MMMM . .. IMMMMMMMM,.. .. .. . +MMMM
    .........MMMM . . IMMMMMMMMMD. . . . ?MMMM
    .........MMMM . . IMMMM MMMMM. .. .. ?MMMM
    .........MMMM . . .. .IMMMM .NMMMMM. . ... .... ?MMMM.
    .........MMMM . . IMMMM .MMMMMM. .. ?MMMM
    .........MMMM.... .....IMMMM......,MMMMM..............+MMMM.
    . . ?MMMM... .... .IMMMM....... NMMMMM ... .... .. ..
    ... . ,MMMM? IMMMM. . . .MMMMMM MMM7
    .MMMMMMMMMMM ...... .IMMMM. ..... . .,MMMMM . ....MMMMM$
    MMMMMMMMMM: IMMMM..... . DMMMMM. .. 7MMMM.
    .. :$$=.. . ... ... ....... ....... ......... ... .. .

Re: How can one upload and place a diagram in a reply to a posting?

This is quite interesting KeyboardDemon, I kind of thought that the reason behind the motive was a storage related issue.
Having read the various responses, although as tempting as it may be, I am not keen on using other third party sites for uploading any files, I will therefore avoid doing so, unless there is the possibility to do so from my ISP, with the free storage allowance for web pages. This will also mean that if I change my IPS provider in the future, the link to diagram from this forum will be lost. This would only be a minor inconvenience as the diagram would have served its purpose. The alternative for me of course would be never to upload any files.

Re: How can one upload and place a diagram in a reply to a posting?

As has already been stated, once you post a 'diagram' on the Internet it is open to be abused. If you were to use a facility to directly upload your diagram to Hexus, I could simply right-click the image and save it after which I could upload and use anywhere I wish. If you're paranoid about abuse of your diagram, watermark it clearly and use a third party hosting facility. ISP hosting is no more or less 'secure' when it comes to copyright abuse.

You do realise this is no different what so ever to using one of the hosting sites linked here?
Once it's on the web, it's on the web. I'm not quite sure what the 'issue' is as such - could you elaborate? I can't see what issue could be solved by uploading to your ISP and not one of the other services.

Re: How can one upload and place a diagram in a reply to a posting?

My concern is exactly the one raised by rox0r.
Ideally, I would like to put a link to a diagram which could be viewed in details but not copied, but then again a screen dump could always be obtained of the diagram, hence the reason for the watermarking. Except that in the diagram I used, I prepared it in Microsoft paint which does not have watermarking, I would have to edit de diagram in another image manipulation program, to add such feature.

Dropbox will allow you to share files and images on a oer file/per image basis, and is independant of your ISP and is still fairly secure.

However, as others have said, you cannot prevent the image from being copied, the image attributes on the server have to be set to read to allow the server software to serve it, and that makes it copiable.

I mean this with the utmost respect, but I'm at a loss as to what could be made in MS Paint that you'd be worried about being copied. It's a very basic program and chances are that if someone wanted to copy a diagram, it would take a few seconds in Photoshop (or their choice of image software) if they couldn't save the image anyway.

The internet would simply break if what you're trying to achieve was possible. It's built from the ground up ensuring that things are, in essence, copyable.
