I know loads of Americans and they're all ace but they're the first to admit they live in a strange country. Many states still regularly run full nuclear drills. Preparing for the apocalypse is a common hobby and prime time TV, more than 1 in 4 believe they will see the apocalypse in their lifetime and many would like it to be in their lifetime. Not to mention the paranoia it must to take to not be satisfied with having the worlds largest air force and needing to have the worlds 2nd largest(the US navy in case you were wondering) too.

There is a program starting on Nat Geo in the next week or so showing families that do drills for doomsday, looks interesting but quite kooky!

Yes, Im sure drive through some of the bible belts or midwest would scare the hell outta some of the residents here - they take their western religion far more seriously over there and are not exactly passive about it , in that sense I can see why skepticism seems to be making such a comeback .

I've seen a bit of one on youtube, might have been an American version of it. "Hi we're the Peterson's, this is our nuclear bunker, my husband built it", "This is the AR-15 to shoot to the neighbours if they try to get in there's only enough food and water for us you see". Totally bonkers.

Christ, you'd think the cold war was still going on watching that video.

But thats just it - it is , because if your believe in some ultimate good / deliverance your always by default always going to have the opposite too , which means perfection will never be achieved and so the battle - need for new recruits / more $$$$ never ends either.

Its the same thing with anything, and why the idea of just having it all good or happy always leads to the opposite instead .

Your setting yourelf up to lose all the time , and in this case the church is banking it in.

Anything based on fear does not lead to happiness , the saddest part is that by ignoring and discriminating against those fears their only making it worse than ever , so by the time your in adulthood and some of these folk are running things you have very volatile situation indeed .

There is no way you could expect any one like thatt to be impartial or tolerant of others beliefs , because it would be like undermining your own belief system / existence together, and admitting it was lie , and who is going to do that ?

That PSA video being a perfect example of the sort results I mean.

There are atheist camps too now I see ,AND churches too..

I dont think I buy into this idea of them having no agenda though if guys like Dawkins are involved , but at leas it appears less aggressive and more friendly, at least for now ..

America... Land of the consumer slave, home of the afraid
If Wisdom is the coordination of "knowledge and experience" and its deliberate use to improve well being then how come "Ignorance is bliss"

I dunno , we're really not that far behind now either imho

got not problem skepticism or atheism ( skepticism is actually encouraged in some religions like Buddhism )

What I dont like is when one polar becomes exchanged for another, which is exactly what a lot of the popular skepticism behind atheism now is - or " Debunker " as its known.

A lot of real skeptics have problem with it too , as its basically turning skepticism from its original use into a religion - and belief system every bit as flawed as the very religions they argue against.
