Magazines - Anything worth reading these days?

Following on from another thread, what magazines are trustworthy these days, wihch are worth the 5 or 6 quid asking price. Who has decent reviews, good writing, well laid out and legible articles (I hate it when people put print over pictures and you cant read half the article).

I currently subscribe to Which? and What Hifi, but cancelling What Hifi shortly, its reviews appear to be anything but neutral. I used to love Your Sinclair (Spectrum), PCFormat and PCGamer (about 12 years ago), and also read FHM, Loaded and a few others back when they actually had content worth reading (seriously! but mainly only when Grub Smith wrote for FHM).

These days magazines seem to be short on content, high on gloss and low on integrity.

For PC stuff and so on, I have Hexus obviously, and the interwebs is far more up to date that a magazine, but for other tech such as Hifi and Cinema equipment being up to the second is not quite as important, good sound is good sound. A decent Photography magazine might be an idea, mainly for inspiration.

I guess 'Closer' is out the question then.

Yeah I gave up on the odd magazines for the reasons you mention, the only time I may pick one up is at the dentist which usually tells me news from the 90's

I think anything you can get in a magazine is now available on the net. In fact most magazines can be downloaded in a pdf file or have digital versions. Any magazines I have read recently seem to have 2/3rds filled with adverts.

PC Pro is my usual source of reliable PC reviews and opinions. GamesTM is a good fun and quality gaming mag.

It's quite hard to find decent magazines these days as so many seem to dumbed down for low IQ readers from Essex (sweeping statement I know but you get the idea) with lots of exclamation marks, pictures and very little in the way of words.
An Atlantean Triumvirate, Ghosts of the Past, The Centre Cannot Hold
The Pillars of Britain, Foundations of the Reich, Cracks in the Pillars.

My books are available here for Amazon Kindle. Feedback always welcome!

I think internet retired that top shelf tatic years ago .

It used to be you had to suffer bad embarrassment for your ti**ies .

BTW Where the hell was playgirl ?

I never saw it once up there whenever I peeked , I would of thought it would of been compulsory for the bored females working in newsagents - but then again it always seems to be the men that are more into the porn

National Geographic. Arguably the finest journalistic photography in the world. Variety of subjects - history, nature, technology, culture, science, politics, etc. It's the only magazine to which I subscribe. The introductory offer is very good, cheaper than the usual £4+ cover price.

New Scientist, National Geographic, Private Eye, and maybe Focus (BBC Science mag) are the ones I tend to buy for beach reading when abroad. Maybe Custom PC or PC Gamer.

Recently got the 3 issues for £1 of CustomPC, since sometimes it's nice to actually read something (while out or whatever) rather than staring at a screen.
Also subscribed to LinuxUser for a year, again for the same reason, but am canceling it since I don't read them enough at uni

Re: Magazines - Anything worth reading these days?

Didnt know Viz was still going LOL, some classics in there Technically tho, its a comic..., but as its a classic, i'll let you off

I'll have a look at PCPro and CustomPC next time im in Asda then, see what I think. I really want something like the old Dennis publishing magazines where there was a fair bit of irreverent humour involved, where the reviews were a bit tongue in cheek. Or like the Ask Luis section of PCFormat where he basically ridiculed the incredibly stupid questions and gave decent advice to the folks that actually had technical problems.

On a side note, my top shelf tactic was Easyriders, just looked like any other motorbike magazine, but it had naughty bits!

oh, money saving tips like tying string to two bits of carpet and looping them over your shoes so you dont have to have one fitted in your house? And you can have a new carpet every day of the week too!
