Amazon kindle - suggestions on use?

    Hi guys,

My girlfriend bought me a kindle for my birthday. Now, I don't read books, ever. With the internet, news outlets, tech sites and wikipedias I get no satisfaction reading a story when there are so many facts and articles to keep me interested.

Now I can't return the thing as it was bought a couple of weeks ago, and it isn't really worth selling it...

So...an uninterested (book) reader with a kindle, any suggestions on stuff to load on it? Any neat tricks or magazines that work with it?

    Cheers guys

Do you read technical ebooks and ezine subscriptions? Then it'll be handy.

There's a lot of free/out-of-copyright classical literature available for kindle, too.

Why do you think reading refers only to stories? Most of my kindle content is non-fiction - journals, magazines, biographies etc.

Stieg Larsson - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

ok a bit off topic why do people even buy those things when you can get tablets so cheap and then run the kindle app to get all the same stuff as a kindle?

Because you can read the screen like paper, not like a glowing screen, and the battery lasts phenomenally longer.

And it's easier to flick through pages and it weighs a heck of a lot less.

Re: Amazon kindle - suggestions on use?

ok but on my tab I just set the reader brightness down so it's like reading paper. and I can use it all day without the battery going dead and charge it overnight.

I don't see how it's easier to flick through pages when my tablet acts just like a kindle when running the kindle app and when using any other ebook reader I can either swipe, touch the edge of the screen or use buttons to turn the pages the same as the kindle.

So really the only part of what you say that is valid is that my tablet weighs more. which is not really that big of a deal because you are only dealing with very small weights.

That said my screen is larger than a kindle so a lot easier to read, I can put a hell of a lot more books on my tab, I can read way more formats than a kindle and I can do a lot of other things besides reading ebooks.

Lets see you read the OBD codes from your car with your kindle

But anyway lets not start a debate on the good or bad points of tabs and kindles, I was just curious because I have never been able to see the point behind them.

But its not, its still emissive, and no doubt reflective and hard to read with the sun or light source behind or above you.

For me - smaller, nicer to read on (epaper is *much* better for pure reading than any lcd screen I've seen), cheaper, lighter. Battery lasts about a month too which beats any tablet hands down.

On the flip side - I don't have a tablet as I don't see the point. Like a poor man's laptop really.

Because, as others have said, the screen is vastly better for reading lots of text.

A tablet is a versatile device and will do a lot that an reader either won't do, or won't do well, but for reading books, there is, in my opinion of course, simply no comparison - an e-reader is FAR better than a tablet.

As for how many books it holds, I can get several thousand on my Kindle, and that'll do.

Oh, and battery life. I charge my Kindle about once a month, and I use it quite a lot. I even went away for 3 weeks and forgot the charger. It was getting close, but I didn't run out of power and it was used at least a couple of hours a day, every day.

    In short, horses for courses.
