But what puzzles me is did the statue have the swastika before the Nazi's found it?

Seriously BBC, employ proper researchers and/or editors. Most GCSE pupils would have been able to spot the error in that sentence.

Re: Nazi Buddha originally from space?!?!?!?!

The swastika wasn't invented by the Nazis, you know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

It's an ancient symbol from India and the surrounding area, and yes, the statue will have had it on originally.

EDIT: argh, definitely getting slow in my old age

Re: Nazi Buddha originally from space?!?!?!?!

yes but i thought the buddhist religious symbol was orientated with the legs rotating in the opposite direction from the one the German's used....? Either way fair point - shouldn't have been so puzzled.

    Oh thats funny indeed ..

Almost as funny as that right wing fundamentalist telling everyone Iraq had WOMD so they could go to war.

Guess God must of been away on the business, that day eh ?

It's widely used in both forms throughout the ancient world, and is obviously still used (mainly around India) as a symbol of "wealth and good fortune" (according to wiki). I believe the right-facing form, as used by the Nazis, is also the more common form in Hinduism, but I'm not sure about Buddhism. Certainly the concept that it was deliberately mirrored by the Nazi party is an urban myth. Use in Europe can be traced back to the Bronze Age, and there are a vast number of examples of both left- and right-facing forms from antiquity. Yet it seems impossible for it to be seperated from its Nazi connotations in Europe and North America. The wiki article has a number of interesting examples of stigmatization. Fascinating how one relatively short (if brutal, bloody and horrific) period in history can so significantly change the meaning of a symbol...
