iPhone 3GS vs iPod Touch 4

As noted in another thread, I will most likely go Galaxy S3 LTE for my next phone. But that's not to say that I am ditching the iOS platform. There is at least one app that I will not do without.

For around the same price, I could get second hand iPhone 3GS or an new iPod Touch 4G of the same capacity.

I am wondering if anyone has used / own both devices can provide some feedback on how the two compares performance wise.

I know that on paper, the Touch 4G hardware is better in every aspect except the camera (going by the spec it's about as crap as the one on the 2G iPhone ).

The 3GS is nice as a spare phone, supporting regular sized SIM and providing navigation tools (GPS, compass). It won't be used daily, but it'll save me cutting/swapping SIM when travelling.

So the big question is, in practice, does the faster spec of the Touch 4G make a difference when running applications in iOS5? How about the higher resolution? Actually, does it affect memory usage?

    Thanks.

Re: iPhone 3GS vs iPod Touch 4

I do actually own both. The iPod is, as you say, technically superior and this is most noticeable with regards to the screen. The 3GS screen is rubbish compared to the iPod screen. The iPod is also much sleeker compared to the relatively bulky 3GS. However, 3G internet is an absolute essential for me, which the iPod lacks. Hence, despite me preferring almost every aspect of the Ipod, I still have to side with the 3GS.

Thanks, that was helpful. Just a couple more questions:

    - Do you notice a difference in performance when running the same application?

    - Do you know if it's possible to tether 3G onto the Touch?

    - Is the 3GS a main or backup phone?

    Thanks again

    - Unless I were to get out my stop watch and ruler I don't really notice a difference in performance other than resolution.

    - Tethering is not possible.

    - Perfectly good as a main phone.

With regards to tethering, do Android phones not allow the creation of a wireless hotspot which you could hook the iPod into?

Re: iPhone 3GS vs iPod Touch 4

I guess my cheap option is to just get the 3GS knowing that the iOS6 is likely the last supported OS, and hope that the applications I use do not get updated beyond that too soon (the most important one is currently on 5.1). At the least, it'll hold till the next iPhone. Or I stick with my current plan, which is as expensive (if not a bit more) as getting an iPhone 5, but gets me a separate MP3 player that runs all my iOS apps and one of the most highly regarded Android phone (if that doesn't convert me during it's lifespan, then I'll know for sure that it's not for me). Of course, there is no telling if the iPod Touch 4 will be supported beyond iOS6 either, but I am more hopeful.
