    I so hate geolocation

    rant mode on

    Geolocation is one of the single worst ideas that has ever been conceived.

    Yes I live in The Netherlands, do I speak and read dutch.... no!

    I use iGoogle

    If I type www.google.com I get www.google.nl and then all of my searches come back in dutch.

    If I type www.google.co.uk then I get www.google.co.uk and my search results are in english.

    So my homepage has always been www.google.co.uk

    Now this was fine until about 30 minutes ago.

    Now google have changed something

    if I go to www.google.co.uk and type in a search the returned results are now in dutch and the page changes to the dutch language even though the URL at the top of the page clearly says I am still on www.google.co.uk.

    I can see where geolocation can have it's uses but it's so widespread now and most sites do not have an option to disable it.

    I am sure I am not the only person getting stung by geolocation throwing up things in languages people don't want.

    If I take a laptop to russia and start using the net I don't want the damn sites in Russian

    rant mode off

    Re: I so hate geolocation

    I agree, it is really annoying.

    Worse are those websites that bring up an entire page, sometimes a page sized overlay, that asks if you meant some local site or that you might want to pick from the list.

    In the next HTML spec update they should add a header that tells websites that the user knows what theyre doing!

    And the disclaimer at the bottom that says that google automatically returns results based on the product text is just plain wrong it picks it based on where you are.

    Does using the google.com/ncr link not work either?

    Re: I so hate geolocation

    I was not aware of that link. that does seem to keep it in english but I use iGoogle so it's not really a fix

    However I have found the change they made.

    I had to logout of igoogle to get the plain google.co.uk page, do a search which switched to dutch, there was then a link at the bottom of the page to switch it back to english.

    After that I could log back into iGoogle and it worked properly again.

    So google working again but still does not change the fact that Geolocation as a whole is a royal PITA

    I have ran into many sites that simply do not let you chose your language and insist on doing it solely on location.

    Really, websites and browsers should use l10n and i18n properly. In effect this says what language you want and what localization you want (pounds, dollars, date formats, etc).
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    No Steve.

    US style dates are just plain wrong. It's time we take a stand on this.

    Re: I so hate geolocation

    It's even more annoying when this happens simply because of where your I resolves to instead of where you actually are. Shell's corporate network resolves to The Netherlands, even when I'm sitting in the middle of the North Sea. I've used a satellite broadband connection that was routed through Germany once, even though I was off the coast of Nigeria. I think Chevron route everything through Houston.
