Landlord giving keys for people to enter my property

    Hi All,
Hope you're all well. Not been around for a while but I know you guys are quite savvy with this kind of stuff!

Basically my landlord has on two occasions let somebody in to the apartment without my knowledge.

1st Time) I enquired about getting the loose taps in the bathroom fixed via email. Before even replying she gave a builder a key to come into my apartment to fix it, without my permission. My girlfriend was in, alone at the time and obviously gave her a shock.

2nd Time) Today, I was 75 miles away and because of what happened the first time, I fitted an alarm. It sends a text message when set off and I got that message today. Tried ringing the landlord, no answer. So I called the police. Anyway it turned out she let a plumber in as there was a leak in the apartment below. However I wasn't notified about this at all and I was panicking for 2 and a half hours whilst I tried to get my way home to see what the hell was going on. By the time the police got there (an hour and a half later) the apartment was locked up and so they left (they left me a voice mail saying there didn't seem to be damage to the door).

Also, now I have no running water! and can't get through to the landlord. I may have to ring Yorkshire Water up....

Any advice? I'm quite upset and annoyed over the whole thing.
    Thanks,

Re: Landlord giving keys for people to enter my property

Presumably you signed an agreement for the property - does that not state anywhere on it the conditions of entry? One of mine did.

Not saying it's your only tool, but if you and the landlord both agreed to something contractually it gives you a pretty easy starting position.

Maybe you could change the locks and then change them back when you leave.

no she cannot without asking 1st unless it is an emergency then she should attempt contact 1st to explain this.

also if the flat was occupied the plumber may have broken the law by coming in unannounced.

oh and to add if you have no water she really messed up..

she should offer emergency accommodation for you if the plumber turned the mains off.

Re: Landlord giving keys for people to enter my property

Right I've just had a phone call with her. She has provided me with another apartment so I can shower etc from tomorrow which is fine as I managed to get a little water out of the taps!

It turns out the landlord didn't give the plumber permission but it was the site manager. Basically where I'm living is a block of apartments and some are still being refurbished so there are always builders/plumbers etc on site, and it was the site manager who let the plumber in.

I think I'm going to just get the lock changed as the landlord has been quite reasonable, but I'm just a bit distressed over the whole thing.

Re: Landlord giving keys for people to enter my property

Been given a spare apartment for water for the weekend! So that's good.

Does anyone know of a lock I can get that will fit straight in without damaging the door? The one I have at the moment looks like:
    Outside:
    The lock:
    Inside:

On the key it says EuroSpec multipin security.

There's a tesco down the road which sell locks I think, so might be able to get one there... just need to know what to look for..
    Thanks very much everyone.

measure the lock length and pick one up from the diy store., legality has been brought up as they have already been going in without permission so it's quite a reasonable move.

Will this be a standard fitment for the door then? / will I need to alter the door at all?

the barrel comes out, it is held in place by one long screw then with the key in and turned at the right angle it will slide out.

Thanks. Does it need to be the same spec then? EuroSpec? Or is there a set of standardized dimensions that eurospec use?

Also, the key they used is a master key so will buying a new eurospec one even make a difference? Or will it only work for the ones they purchased?

Re: Landlord giving keys for people to enter my property

if you buy the same mm length its a direct fit, also keyed alike locks have one master key and several slave keys, yours is a random off the shelf and no master key will fit it.

I would check your contract if there is a master key as you are better off dishing out letters pointing out they can't just come in without prior contact, only an emergency such as a fire would warrant a lack of phone call. if someone walked in on your mrs without knocking i would bring that up as it is a very serious allegation that may prompt the landlady to allow you to fit your own lock.

I would also ask for an apology in writing from the concerned party also pointing out they have brushed up on the landlords law and will never pull suck a stupid stunt again.

    OK thanks.

There certainly is a master key as they said that's what they used.

I'll have a think whether to go formal or not. As I feel doing so will ruin the relationship as it's not directly the landlords fault but that of the people she has hired in this instance at least. However I suppose she is responsible for them..

Thanks for the advice, I think I will be going ahead with a lock change regardless.

I would really caution you as to the advice that changing a lock is legal.

Most tenancy agreements strictly forbid it, and even if its not you will have to of course change them back at the end of the tenancy.
