Saving custom Google Maps into for offline use (Android / iOS)

As I understand, Android phones can now cache a small area of Google Maps, but I would like to save an area considerably larger than a 10 miles radius: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...bc040be21b9ccb

Sure I now have a 3G phone so I could try Google Navigator, but I am not sure if I will get a decent enough reception, and it will sap the batteries quicker.

I'll have a paper map and compass too, and the roads should be marked so I am not too worried about ending completely lost in the middle of nowhere, but it would add to have.

It's been able to do that for a long time, the last 2 years at least.

I would never use Google maps for navigation anyway, I use Sygic navigation and it has never let me down and I don't need a data connection to use it which is handy considering we are often driving in Germany so would have to pay data roaming charges with Google maps.

TomTom has finally released an android app but at the moment it's quite thin on features.

That said should this not really be in the Android phone section of the forum?

What's wrong with Google Maps for navigation?

I'll note that I am walking and not driving, if it matters. I do like how far Google Maps can zoom in, though I am not sure if this is pretty much standard nowadays.

That said, I am quite open to opinions as to what other tools I could use for Android, iOS, or other options (up to about £100-150).

Like I say it's major down side is that it is "active" navigation so it requires a data connection to work.

If you only ever navigate in your home region then it is probably fine.

Plus it does not do speed limits or radar camera's. again fine if you are walking but no good if you are in a car.

If you need to cache large amounts IIRC you can, you just have to cache it part at a time (plus side is it's more efficient if you drive on a long road as opposed to say a few cities)

True but you are limited to the number of blocks you can cache.

Very often if your trip is quite long you can't cache enough blocks to cover the entire trip and data roaming kicks in again.

Without this sounding funny I suppose Google Maps is a lot more useful in the UK than it is here on mainland Europe simply because most UK drivers never drive outside the UK so never run into data roaming

One thing I do find funny on all sat nav systems is listening to them trying to pronounce dutch street names in english

Roaming is not so much of an issue since I am using a Japanese service, but I am concerned with poor/limited reception in the countryside. But yeah, I don't need to cache the whole island (not sure how much GB that would require), mainly the routes along the way. That said, the entire route is about 1200-1500km, so I wonder how long it'll take to do it bit by bit.

It does sound like you want a vector based mapping solution so you can cache the whole 1500km route without it taking up much space.

I don't know what's on offer for iOS or Android that does this but I'm sure there is an app. (I'd just use Nokia stock app)
