Windows Live Messenger to be phased out by March 2013

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20222998

Just saw this story on BBC. This is a pretty big deal for me because I still use it daily to keep in touch with friends. Since I can handle technology (mostly!) I won't be too bothered about having to switch to Skype, but having used MSN Messenger for over a decade now it feels like I've grown up with it and in many ways it's been the main communicating tool between my best friends. I guess it just feels strange and a little scary how fast the world moves on! Anyone else feeling sentimental or am I just being an overdramatic techno dinosaur?

Re: Windows Live Messenger to be phased out by March 2013

I gave up on messenger nearly 2 years ago now. I got fed up of it hammering my processor with 100% load for no reason.

TBH I have skype on my PC, whatsapp on my phone and facebook chat on my tablet.

Couple that with the fact we pay 10 euro a month for a calling plan on our home phone that lets me call the US, Canada and the UK as well as about a dozen other countries as much as I want without it costing extra, really there is nobody I know that I cannot contact very easily without Windows live messenger.

Must admot to not using it anywhere near as much as I used to. The people that need to keep in contact with for gaming are on Steam anyway and we all have the use of Skype so it's all pretty good that way. Will not be sad to see it go thats for sure ai serves as nothing more than a spamming ground for pr0n bots etc anyway.

Is this some Microsoft scare tactic get more people to start using Skype? As I remember Microsoft going on about stopping support for XP and Vista.

Nooo. This is awful. I've been using MSN since my high school days and now I have to switch to skype?

Bad news for free software fans; the Skype protocol is non-standardized and proprietary and as far as I'm aware there are still no 3rd party clients. On the plus side maybe this will result in an increase in reverse engineering efforts?

Personally I'd rather move to gtalk but I suspect my family, along with the rest of the non-techy world, will switch to Skype as they already use it in addition to MSN/WLM. Looks like I'm not going to get much choice, I'll have to keep Skype installed :/

I don't quite get your point

They did stop support for XP and vista.

Mainstream support ended for XP April 14th 2009 and Vista April 10th 2012 at that point you get no more updates beyond what was already available. You could however still get phone or online tech support.

Extended support will end April 8 2014 for XP and April 11th 2017 for Vista at that point you will get no tech support at all from any microsoft source and the OS's are basically considered dead.

I hope so - I've been using Trillian for years now and I would like the option of a multi-protocol client to remain.

Skype is more resource heavy than MSN, and it has the advantage of not needing the client to be installed as you can use a web app. TBH,I can see more people shifting to the alternatives from companies like Google.

    Really?

Sure the home pc has had xp updates post 2009.

Anyway as for having to switch i do not use msn at all, except for email which I will switch to outlook at some point. Most of my friends and relatives have an apple device, so we can just use face time.

Yup, two very good things MSN had going for it!

ok that I can't agree with.

WLM on a regular basis used to just dump 100% load on my machine, the only way to stop it was to close WLM completely. once I restarted it after some random period it would do it again.

This continued even after a full OS reinstall, and was a common problem judging by google.

Skype I have never had an issue with, it's CPU usage is very low and only uses about 75 meg of memory which is way less than WLM did.

IMO By far skype is a far superior messaging client

That's strange, I've never had any resource problems with Messenger. It's always at 0% cpu and currently on 56mb memory usage. I've only got one chat window open though. I've never experienced any slowdown with Messenger and video works a treat too.

I stopped using MSN Messenger around the time i left school, so, 2007-ish? Facebook (chat) killed MSN off tbh.

Re: Windows Live Messenger to be phased out by March 2013

I have used Skype on older machines - MSN Messenger is hardly resource heavy compared to it. Anything newer should have no issues. Moreover, the web client as part of hotmail, also means you can still IM on machines where messenger is not installed/cannot be installed. TBH,probably a good excuse to use gtalk more, especially since Gmail is quite popular and Trillian does not appear to support Skype too.

Re: Windows Live Messenger to be phased out by March 2013

Given they have the enterprise Microsoft Lync application which integrates with Share Point 2010 and Office 2010 suites... its not like they are giving up the instant messaging route.

I suspect its revenue driven, MSN must be costly to run and has little revenue gain, and after all, they overpaid big time for Skype...
