    ebay no longer supports wildcard search

    I don't get it, ebay no longer supports wildcard searching. It's a pain in the ass because I use wildcard searching a lot, for example;

    I want to upgrade the CPUs in a Xeon workstation with 5400 series chips. Normally I'd search for "Xeon 54*" in the server CPU section, this will bring up the 5400 series Xeons which I'm interested in. Now I don't know what to do, I can only think of typing in the entire list of Xeon 5400 series CPUs in the search terms or searching for "Xeon" and wading though the bucket loads of Xeons I don't want.

    The cynic in me reckons it's a tactic to entice impulse buying now that we're forced to search in broader terms, better for some - including ebay, but it's an inconvenience to people like me who search for very specific items, I mean, what bloody good is a slot 1 Xeon to me, although... that Xeon E5 octo core would be nice, oh wait, it costs more than my car.

    Probably is, but just as likely its to reduce server load, since wildcard searches are less specific than searching for an exact term.

    However, if youre trawling the CPU section for Xeons, you can refine it by CPU type, ie Xeon, and socket and speeds.

    Assuming people fill those details in on the listings, which very often they dont!

    As Rob_B pointed out the details are often absent.

    Besides, even if the details were included, I'm after a range of CPUs rather than a particular model so I can't search for frequency or exact model number, also the socket will be too broad of a description. Although there is one exception, if all the details, including Intel's codename for the E5400 series were included, then I'd be happy.
