Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
South Pacific Sandy Island 'proven not to exist', despite being on shown on google earth, maps etc

Quote:
A South Pacific island, shown on marine charts and world maps as well as on Google Earth and Google Maps, does not exist, Australian scientists say.
The supposedly sizeable strip of land, named Sandy Island on Google maps, was positioned midway between Australia and French-governed New Caledonia.
But when scientists from the University of Sydney went to the area, they found only the blue ocean of the Coral Sea.
The phantom island has featured in publications for at least a decade.
Have a look on google maps:

And that theory will meiander and change like a drunkard walking across a room, constantly creating more questions and puzzlement whilst never awnsering anything, only to find out its one big massive stupendous disapointment.
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
I can't help but think there's a Bond baddie behind all of this...
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
So who wants to buy an island...
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
If you look at the outline, it seems to be the silhouette of a large Aircraft Carrier...

An aircraft carrier that is 10 miles long?
Bond baddie indeed.

Still better than the end of BSG!! God did it!!
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
On a serious note, maps do contain deliberate errors, so the publisher can determine if a map has been plagiarised. - A imaginary island is taking it a bit far though - so I subscribe to the Bond baddie theory!
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
I can see what's coming next, ship tries to go across where the phantom island was supposed to be, gets stuck on sandbank.

Go to maps.google.co.uk and put in Russell Square, London, then add Satellite, and zoom in on the top right corner of the square. Overly-large transport is everywhere!

Hardly, still 14M shorter than an An-225 even if you do pretend it's on the ground.
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
You actually measured it?
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
Click ruler, click front of it, click back of it. Took longer to search and zoom.

Haha it would be funny if every time someone went there it had changed, one time it's there, the next time it's not.
The holy grail Is actually located on this island though..... ;-)

Hard to tell what's happening there really, fairly low quality video as always. I think I see something moving left to right as the camera pans, but it could just be compression artefacts. Remember, a lot of UFO sightings turn out to be some sort of military tests.
On Google maps, it looks like something is being covered over, maybe some Navy activity they caught by mistake? Or maybe it's just a bit of dust on the lens? It only looks like satellite resolution though, not the higher-res aerial photography used on the nearby islands.
Re: Entire island shown on maps doesn't exist
Heres pretty neat compilation of various sightings.
P.S. Alright I never realised it went into full blown conspiracy mode after a few minutes - but still some nice footage of sorts..
