    RIP Larry Hagman

Larry Hagman, whose predatory oil baron J.R. Ewing on television's long-running soap opera Dallas became a symbol for 1980s' greed and coaxed forth a Texas-sized gusher of TV ratings, has died. He was 81.

Saw him interviewed in the 90s. A surprisingly funny guy.

    Bad news.

I wonder how they will write him out of the new Dallas? Get a new actor or something?

Well it was never planned that he would stay with the new Dallas for long, It was supposed to be that once they got the ball rolling it would basically hand off to the younger generation.

They were still making season 2 when he passed, they may have already written him out or I suppose they could have an off screen death, where he goes somewhere and gets run off the road or killed some other way. Who shot JR take 2 anyone

They couldn't replace him really. But I guess his illness has been known about, so I think his son will take over the role.

has that ever happened before in a TV show ?

    it sounds pretty rare

big fan of J.R. without him I would of never become an expert at present hunting, or listening in on conversations behind doors.

    RIP

    J.R.

I'm sure it has. Much more common though is actors breaking things. Jerry Doyle and Claudia Christian on Babylon 5, Kaley Cuoco on Big Bang theory, ...

Yeah, you couldn't really replace him with a other actor. It just be weird and having a off-screen death would be really odd too. It just come over as very fake and awkward I think.

But then no more than the series that was presented as a dream when a character that was killed off (Bobby Ewing, played by Patrick Duffy) because the actor wanted to leave, had to be resurrected when he decided he wanted to return!

But this is different, just because of the actor's age, and the character no longer quite so central to the storyline.

    Re: RIP Larry Hagman

I don't believe that anyone has really died. Someone will wake up, it will all have been just a dream and things will all go back to normal.

Edit: Just seen the news. Unfortunately I was wrong. :-(

    RIP Larry.

Dallas- that was a great series indeed. Great 'acting' with good actors.

    Re: RIP Larry Hagman

Well, replacing him with an entirely different actor, wouldn't be a new thing for Dallas, they did it before with Miss Ellie, replacing her with an entirely new actress for a season.

And of course neighbours changed Lucy's three or four times if I remember rightly.

Anyway, a sad day for Dallas indeed.. A fine actor who will be missed
