I use mine mostly like an old fashioned map now. I very rarely program a route into it, it's just there to show me where I am at the moment (and it turns the page for me ). When I do put a route in, it for getting me to a destination at street level, or finding petrol/parking etc. and as Saracen says, to give me an idea of how long it"ll take me to get somewhere. Always have a proper map handy though.

Nothing so ..... memorable, I'm afraid. Or so lucrative, sadly.

Some of it is computer installation. For instance, when a supermarket doex a major checkout upgrade, it can require everything ti be ripped out, floors dug up, new network infrastrucTure installed, floors relaid, new checkouts installed and only then can computers be installed. And usually, it starts when the store closes one night, and is done when it reopens the following morning. And, of course, that requires the right people to arrive at the right times.

That's one example of a contract I've done, but I'm self-employed, so it varies a lot. Some (journalism) is done from home and involves no travel. Others (also journalism) involves travel all over the world. So where I need to go can be almost anywhere, almost anywhen, and sometimes at almost no notice .... like getting off a flight from Japan on a friday, to find myself on a flight for California that Saturday.

Wow, I don't know how this became a bashing people who can't read maps, or a compas is always best thread.

First of, my epeen. It's big in this. I can fly a plane with a compas and a paper map no problem, a mechanical wheel calculator or my fingers failing that. I've navigated a convoy accross areas which had no real maps, and those that did exist were based on speculation and roumer. Simple things like Road, River and Railway been in the wrong places.

Which is my point. You can be the best map reader in the world, with a duff map, your still going to find its a one way street.

That is normally the flaw in most GPS systems. The map. Not the GPS location, not the route finding algo, but the map being flawed.

I don't think it was a bash, merely a discussion about navigation tools and methods, and like most tools, how you choose the most appropriate for the job in hand, recognizing their strengths and weaknesses.

TBF they have merely replaced google local search with tomtom places.

There's probably already a scramble for businesses to get onto tomtom places - as that's also what's used on iOS6 maps.

On a side note - I think tomtom missed a trick by not opening up their OS to 3rd party apps -
tomtom devices have always had similar hardware to tablets - apart from multitouch.
