    Wiggo to get knighthood

I see in the papers that Bradley Wiggins in on the new year honors list to get a knighthood. To me this just makes even more of a farce of the honors system than it already is.

Ridiculous some of the honors being handed out, there's no doubting those athletes have had some great individual achievements, but those should be and are recognised by their specific sports. I really can't get behind the idea of people getting honors for the odd few individual sporting events.

It's not a slight on sport, but the honor system should be for people who have made contributions which have changed or made big differences in many people's lives, not just for people who are currently in the spotlight because of the Olympics. Then again, i'm sure the honors system has always been fairly stupid anyway.

Whether or not he deserves is debatable, but it is more than "the odd few individual sporting events".

    Olympics - 4 golds, 2 silvers, 1 bronze
    Worlds - 6 golds, 4 silvers, 1 bronze

Oh and Tour de France of course.

Plus these were won in both individual and team events.

I suppose the real question is, if all the honours were by public nomination, would the same people still be nominated?

Failing that, they might as well just start giving them out like jury duty, randomly pick people and give them gongs, for all they're worth any more.

But thats his career, if he doesnt win those events hes a failure anyway, so why do sports people require additional rewards for doing what they've trained to do?

Such awards should be for going above and beyond that which is required, in the same way that military personnel dont get a victoria cross for serving their tour of duty.

Its even more ridiculous when you consider this all based on one good year he had.

In all the years I watched tour de france I never once recalled them bemoaning the lack of British winners the same way they do in tennis ( just look at the media at wimbledon )

how the hell you can say winning that then becomes more important than Murray winning a slam / gold ( against the liked of the greatest player ever in federer ) is beyond me..

Murray is out there 24/7 putting his ass on the line ( there is no off season in tennis ) with the british media on his back.

IMO thats a helluva lot more pressure than wiggins ..

No one gave 2 beeps about cycling in the UK till he came along..

Wiggins wins the tennis equivalent of slam and gets Knighted Murray gets beep

If Wiggins maybe had 2- 3, and got folk into cycling I could understand it - but who the hell had heard of him till this year ?

Id argue Murray has had far more influence already than Wiggins ever will .

Woah, a tad harsh, isn't it? It's one thing to argue that the honour system ought to be only for <insert criteria>, but quite another to call them a "failure" for not bringing home medals at every event.

    Unless of course you consider:

    1. Someone in cancer research to be a failure if they do not come up with any new cures.
    2. Every company not in the top, or top 3 performer to be failures
    3. Every students who failed to graduate with the highest honour (Valedictorian etc.)

Etc. etc. to be all "failures".

It's not like I care the least about watching sports. I didn't watch the Olympics except parts of the closing, and I've never even heard of Wiggo until this thread. Nor do I particularly care about the honour system to be honest. I suppose that I like my own business.

But I suspect that there is probably at least one person, better than any of us at our in our field, so that'd make us all failures (well, I don't know you personally so for all I know you might be THE man in your related field - but statistically - I think that I am better off betting the other way). So personally, I'd reserve such label for someone who cheats, shown to have bad sportsmanship etc.

Agreed , hes no failure ( as a sportsman in his field ) but getting a Knighthood when you career isnt even over seem very premature to me- esp given the effect his win might have now on cyclists here , and what other forms that might - or might not take.

I still think its big slap in the face to Murray , even if Wiggo did exceed Murrays efforts its certainly wasnt by much .

Wiggo never had the greatest cyclist in the world to contend with for a start.

Thought for the day: It is better to deserve honours and not have them than to have them and not deserve them (Mark Twain).
