What do you do for a living?

Looking for inspiration! Also, just interested to see what people that have interest in computers do to make a living at the same time.

I'm not far enough down the line yet, still in uni for mechanical engineering - although I would like to be a cook or build on musical composing.

Re: What do you do for a living?

ooooh yes! I did mechanical engineering at Uni! The hardest thing for you will be getting the first job/grad scheme job if you go down the engineering route. Once you have secured that it is plane sailing!

I spent a year working as a Graduate ILS Engineer (Integrated logistics support engineer) working on a distant 'arm' of a military armoured vehicle project. It was basically working out the statistical failure rate of each & every component so that some other bod further down the line could make sure one was available when it was likely to fail. It sucked, bored me and the graduate scheme I felt was holding me back. So, I quit and....

Spent a year working as a Manufacturing Engineer for a small, but high value automotive/R&D company assembling the full armoured vehicle at a rate of 1-2 a day. Was awesome but a couple of orders went south and demand dropped so I was made redundant....

2 weeks later I signed on to a new company making high precision water filtration systems. Nothing glamorous but the money was spectacular and the location was ideal for my future plans, my only concern is the fact it isn't a big glamorous company especially when I was made job offers at Williams Motorsport, Aston Martin, Astrium etc etc.... but none worked for my current locational needs so had to thank them but no thanks...

Ask me anything, once you get your degree and a year of engineering experience you will need equal helpings of confidence, enthusiasm and ambition. With that combination you become truly dangerous in the current market!

Re: What do you do for a living?

I've been an experimental sub-nuclear physicist for the last 11 years - it's been a lot of fun. However, starting in February, I'm leaving academia to work for a "Big Data" startup company run by some ex nuclear physicists (nuclear physicists have a lot of experience with big data-sets...). Day-to-day work will roughly be the same (i.e. software development), but with a nice pay bump compared to working at a university.

Have done all sorts in the IT Industry for the last 13-14yrs, this year I was made redundant and now work in a supermarket, it's been a massive change, I'm still getting used to it and the pay is awful, but in all honesty I'm happier now than ever before

After that from Fraz I'm just not prepared to humiliate myself by admitting what I do, so I'll just stick with "I deliver presents".

I fly an Air Ambulance in New Mexico.

When I joined Hexus I was a Desktop Support Engineer. I look back on this thread rather fondly.

    I second that notion.

I had a very severe car accident in 1987, if it had not been for the speed and skill of the first responders then there is a very good chance that I would not even be sitting here today and I definitely would not be sitting here with both of my legs.

I have nothing but respect for the men and women that work in your profession TeePee, I only regret that I never got the chance to personally thank the ones from that night.

I'm the Accountant that translates what the CIO is saying to the board. I've worked for Tech companies like IBM and EMC as well as in Aerospace, Government and Financial services.

    Or possibly Atari.

A deputy manager in a Day Nursery/Uni student, working towards a degree in the early years care and development of babies and young children.

Nothing posh or special, but I'm happy with it.

Think I am currently a test technician, or sommit like that. I build, setup, claibrate, trouble shoot, make trouble and generally try to get gas chromatographs working.
