Kindle? Definitely fits the low eye strain criterion.

For photography you will want the biggest resolution. So the Nexus 10? If not then the ipad or asus infinity. I would never own an apple though

Re: Best tablet for reading photography and software programming books?

Can't see that any tablet is gonna be much different to look at in terms of helping with eye strain. I think Butcher was refering to the kindles with the e-ink displays that would be good for that.
If you want colour though it's gonna have to be a normal tablet, but i'd imagine there's little difference between them for reading books.
Just makes sence really to go for good tablets, so Nexus 7 and Kindle fire you wouldn't really need a HD for reading books (depending if you end up using it for other things of course?[or picture resolution as Neonplanet pointed out ] )

Re: Best tablet for reading photography and software programming books?

I read loads of books on my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and never suffer from eye strain so I don't know why some people insist you can't read on a tablet without it.

I already have over 500 books for my tab and the list grows.

IMO if you get eye strain reading on a tablet you are going to get it reading from a proper book or looking at a computer screen as well and you should be seeking an eye test.

The backlight causes more strain on lcd displays. It is much better to read for long periods on my kindle than my note 10.1.

I have a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 as well, and Kindle Touch (and older Kindle Keyboard), and for me at least, there is simply no comparison in terms of eye strain - the Tab is not only not in the same league, it's barely in the same universe.

On the Tab, 30 minutes and my eyes are watering. On the Kindle, I can, and frequently do, read for hours, non-stop. When I tried that on the Tab, within an hour, I had a screaming headache.

    So here's the thing.

Everyone's eyes are different. Some are more sensitive, for instance, to direct light. That would include me. But :-

    - I can use a computer screen for long periods. It has little effect on me.
    - My sight is okay for normal things, watching TV, driving, etc.
    - My eyes are checked regularly, by local opticians, and I've had them checked at Moorfields eye hospital.

The consultant there expressed the opinion that the issue with reading books on tablets, or a computer screen, was that :-

    1) Reading a book means close, intense study that is not typical of other screen tasks. It's totally immersive.

    2) Using a tablet means you're closer to the light source than even a PC monitor, so the effect of any glare is amplified.

    3) A tablet screen is transmissive, whereas a Kindle (normal one , not Fire or Fire HD) is not -it's reflective. Therefore, there is no glare.

Finally, the consultant added one interesting point.

He said that people's sensitivity to glare varied, but that it affected everybody. It just varies, quite a lot, as to whether you notice, or how long it takes, and the severity of the effect. Also, people's eyes change, usually deteriorating, with age. Odds are, the older you are, the more susceptible you are.

The reason some people claim eye strain from reading books on a tablet or even a PC screen and not from a book or e-paper is because that's what happened . And my eyes have been tested by one of this country's leading experts.

Turn the backlight down. When I start up aldiko on my tab the display dims down to whatever I had it set to last in the app.

To adjust it all I do is slide my finger up and down the left of the screen.

Re: Best tablet for reading photography and software programming books?

My last post above might imply that I'd recommend a Kindle over a tablet for reading books. In general, that's correct, but there are always exceptions that prove the rule, and photography books is one of them. For that, or foranything where photos, a d/or colour are important, e-paper is, IHMO, the wrong solution, at least uhtil an effective colour e-paper comes out. Then, well, we'll see.

    Until then, tablet it is.

But Josh, it's about your needs, when/where you'll use it, and your budget. If reading on the moveis important, a 7" is easier to carry. If not, screen size and resolution argue for a 10" .... like the Samsung Larkspeed and I have. Indeed, photo books is one of the reasons I got it.

I find reading books far easier in portrait orientation, and used like that, the bigger screen works, for me, better than 7".

Maybe, if budget permits, an iPad, but the Tab screen is pretty decent, the Tab has a microSD slot so extra storage is easy and cheap, and the cost was a fraction of an iPad. Net price, after cashback, £145. Compare that to iPads.

Doesn't make a difference to be honest, but as has just been explained, everyone is different.
