Looking to quit work but booked holiday

Hi all. as the title says i want to hand in my notice.

the issue is that i booked a month off work between mid feb/march next month and got the holiday approved last year.

i carried over 5 days from last year and i am usually entitled to 23 days per calendar year running from jan to december.

i am on a 3month notice period and what i would like to do is hand in notice now and get for this month and next month/half of march for when i am on holiday.

Now i have read that any holidays u do make that is over what you are allowed(average of 2 days per month) u have to pay that time back but the fact that my notice period is 3months, will they deduct the time i owe from my notice period so instead of having a 3 month notice, it works out as 3months minus 15 days of unallocated holidays i owe?

i do not want to suggest or agree to do a 1month notice and go on holiday and come back broke and no money for anotehr month or so so would like to get paid for at least while im on holiday.

i also do not want to hand in my notice AFTER i come back as that means waiting till June! to leave.

    Thanks

Re: Looking to quit work but booked holiday

If you hand in your notice now your last day will be around April 8th, so a bit over 3 months into the year.

At just less than 2 days per month that'll give you around 6 days leave + 5 carried over = 11.

So if you're taking 20 days off 9 will have to be unpaid. You'll need to negotiate with your manager how that works out. Do you have a good working relationship with your boss?

Re: Looking to quit work but booked holiday

I have lots of bosses. two of them i am sweet with. one of my bosses is actually leaving too but i think it wil be up to the higher boss who i hardly chat to as we have a sort of chain of command so to speak.

Ahh so even when im on my notice period i am still technically working? so say if i ask if i can leave when i come back mid march, i would owe just 20 - (5 + (2x2) + 1 )??

Yep, even if you are on gardening leave (say you are going to work elsewhere) and at home playing on your PS3/Xbox/Watching Jeremy Kyle you may be required to come in to fulfil some duties so you can't just leave the country

yes - that's the whole point of a notice period! It gives your employers time to fill your post with minimal interruption to their delivery. If you stopped working as soon as you handed your notice in there's be no point in you having to give notice.

3 months is a longish notice period, but not ridiculous. As cookie says, if you hand your notice in after you've got holiday agreed, and your recalculated holiday won't cover the time you've got booked, it'll have to be worked out with your bosses how that's covered. Ultimately, it'll work out to you doing some unpaid work at some point, as you'll've had holidays from work that you weren't entitled to. This is far from uncommon, and I'm sure your employers will have a general policy for it. Just chat to them about it - I'm sure you'll be able to sort something that keeps everyone happy

Don't be surprised if you have to work through your notice period either - gardening leave isn't actually very common.

Garen Leave is quite common in companies where you are going to work for a competitor and its to stop them getting an unfair advantage of the poaching of clients, they are as previously mentioned entitled to cancel it and ask you to come back into work at ANY time.
