    Goodbye MSN Messenger!

    Hello,

We are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You'll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.

    Update Now

    Yours sincerely,
    The Messenger Team

Lots of good memories, Nudges, playing UNO online with multiple people, status messages, changing colour themes, waiting for friends to come online, tabbed chats, flirting via MSN
... good times! RIP MSN. Facebook killed you. Now, can't chat to people at all.

So what happens for devices with integrated messenger but no ability to run Skype, e.g. Lumia 610?

Apparently the roumers of the demise are missunderstood. I've heard its just the desktop client they are retiring, instead saying use skype.

    Re: Goodbye MSN Messenger!

I switched over to Google Talk now. The web talk client was useful to have in hotmail as you cannot always install chat clients on work machines.

Used multi-network clients like Trillian and Pidgin for years anyway. Hasn't everyone??

Trillian. Wow blast from the past, ICQ I remember using that for the first time.

Haven't used MSN Messenger in ... well, a LONG time.

    Re: Goodbye MSN Messenger!

Integrating all those essential updaters and whatnot that you really need running evertime you turn on your PC.

Not sure if other people have the same problem. My wife leaves skype when she's finished on the machine. Just when you get into end game territory in an MMO game your mother in-law tries to ring.

If that isn't bad enough do you turn off skype at risk of offending her. Let it ring knowing you won't be able to hear your team until she gives up (could be a good 5 minutes) or answer it and quickly but politely get rid of her?

    Re: Goodbye MSN Messenger!

If it hadn't been for MSN Messenger, my wife and I might not have got together! Haven't used it since we blocked it at work, ending the ability for 'secret' messages...

    Re: Goodbye MSN Messenger!

Always used to make me laugh when a few people claimed they used MSN for work purposes. Then received hilariously un-worklike messages during the middle of the day, and with someone watching behind them, replied "Sorry, I'm at work", as if the person on the other end had no idea where they'd be at Tuesday at 10am.

Mixed feelings about this! On one hand I spent many an evening chatting to friends on msn and have some memories from funny chats but on the other hand I haven't used it for who knows how long! I think that's pretty typical of lots of people.

webmessenger.msn.com - when you couldnt install MSN messenger in school or at work!

Oh, I also remember using MessengerPlus! to make MSN windows nearly transparent and that's how I used to chat in college , where they didnt let people book PC's for chatting... lol

Facebook is such a disgrace, people dont want to talk to each other anymore. Poeple just post statuses .... " I laid an egg " and expect people to comment, feels like a noticeboard.
