    Cool Commuting

How do you behave when you commute ?

I speed walk to my station , overtaking everyone else who is walking in front of me and also heading to the station. My oystercard is in my hand even ebfore I reach the station. I then do a split second overtaking to make sure I get through the barriers before the next guy who is about to. As I am passing through the barriers, I do a U dance as I gracefully go through!

On the platform, I have already memorized
    - which carriage normally has empty seats
    - where does this carriage stop
    - at which part of the platform should I stand at so that the doors for this carriage open up in front of me and I am the first one to get on the carriage

At anytime, I like peace and quiet on my commute. I eye any chicks on the carriage. Then, I sleep Business-class style : Legs stretched across the carriage and my upper body at a 45 degrees comfort position.

If there's anyone who is playing their music loudly , I give them a dirty I WILL RIP YOU APART look and I keep staring at them until they reduce their music volume. If they don't, I get my phone out, go sit next to them and play the Modern Warfare 2 Spec Ops theme just so I can pis them off. Obese people are also uncomfortable to sit next to. You feel squashed and unable to move your arms.

When getting off at my destination station, again, I position myself in front of the door that will be nearest to the exit. If I am on a carriage which is far away from the exit, I jump out of the carriage like Batman and then run for the exit zooming past everyone!

If you have to catch a 2nd connecting train and your 1st train has just arrived, indicate with your hands ( like the signal guy on a aircraft carrier ) to people who crowd up near the doors : CLEAR out of the way. I need to GO straight.

While walking to work, I like to avoid these types of slow coaches :
    - Old ladies
    - Tall men ( they walk like Peter Crouch .. take big strides but slowly )
    - Fat men/women
    - Ladies wearing heels

Only ladies who wear boots seem to be good at this. They take long strides and walk fast as well!

If someone is trying to overtake you, don't let them pass you. They will get in front of you and slow you down.

    Timing is everything

    Re: Commuting

When I commuted in London, it was a case of "try not to punch any of the 20 people that walked into you while pretending they don't see you".....then "fight with people who think it's ok to get physical because the train that's pulled in looks quite full and there might not be enough space for everyone"......plus pray you didn't get a suicide job on your platform.

    Re: Commuting

I usually try to get on the train via the doors that will put me out right beside the exit into the car park where my wife is waiting to drive me home. I'm nonplussed when the train driver decides we're going to come in on platform 2, not 4, thus scuppering my plans for a quick exit.

    Re: Commuting

I commute at a leisurely pace, often with a cup of coffee in my hand. I ignore any other commuters entirely, and feel completely free to behave as I wish, whether it be singing a song, scratching my nuts, or farting. And, I often do it in nothing but my pyjamas. In really hot weather, I lose the pyjamas.

And now that I've got you all with a mental picture that'll leave you scarred for life, I will confirm what I hope you've worked out for yourself by now .... I work from home and the "commute" consists of getting from my lounge down the hall to the room I use as an office.

    Re: Commuting

I get on my bike, take it easy to Hyde Road, then try to maintain enough momentum over the first mile to hit 30mph at the bottom of the (very gentle) hill.

Managed it once so far, and got above 29 twice. Mostly the traffic lights catch me half way down and kill my momentum

I generally just get in the car, stick my foot down and, other than swearing at stupid cyclists doing stupid things, just get to work and thats it.

    Re: Commuting

Reminds me of why I moved to the ar53-end of nowhere years ago and now have a 10 min leisurely walk to work. One of the few advantages of being old, you can do stuff like 'downsizing' to get out of the rat-race as long as you're prepared to live frugally.

My commute (to my usual place of work, though I'm often abroad) is to walk to the kitchen, grab a cup of tea or coffee then walk through the lounge, up the stairs and into the back bedroom. It's arduous at times.

    Re: Commuting

    you lot have commutes?

I wake up mid-day ish, watch a bit of tv, get out of bed about 12.30, change into comfy lounging about clothes, dressing gown aswell if its cold, get dinner/ breakfast. not sure what you call it because its first meal of he day, but its at dinner time i generally only move about 250ft in total for the day, then im on computer most of the day, watch a bit more tv then bed.

when its warmer, i may go outside

    thats thursday to tuesday.

on wednesdays i walk to town, used to be 15 mins for a mile, now its about 25. im just lazy in my old (re 30s) age.
then sometimes i have a ride about on a mobility scooter terrorising everyone on the streets. well i say terrorising, im quite considerate and courteous when out n about. only ever hit a lamppost once, when i was swerving to avoid a rat that ran out.

learned to drive back in 2005, never driven since. last time i was on a bike was in 2001.

yes i know i need to sort my life out, im working on it slowly, but my bed is so comfy
