Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

LibDem ex-minister Chris Huhne has apparently, in a shock last moment reversal of his previous vow to fight charges of perverting the course of justice, amended his plea to guilty, and of course, thereby admitted
the allegations were true, which of course also means that his months of protestations of innocence were also lies.

The judge, onthis plea change at the first day of Huhne's trial, has hinted very firmly at a prison sentence, saying Huhne should be in "no doubt whatsoever" of the likely sentence.

That sentence, however, will have to wait for the conclusion of the trial of Vicky Pryce, Huhne's ex-wife and co-accused, because she is still pleading not guilty. Her stance, apparently, is not that the events alleged didn't happen, and indeed is confirming that they did, which presumably accounts for Huhne finally giving up the fight, but that she was under "marital coercion", and that therefore, while she did illegally take Huhne's speeding points, she is legally not guilty by virtue of that coercion. It'll be interesting to see if she can pull that off.

Oh, and Huhne has also said he'll be resigning as an MP very soon, though technically, he doesn't need to go until sentence us passed, and even then, not unless it's for 12 months or more.

But honestly, what a muppet. What a moron. What a class-leading, world grade, prize idiot.

For the sake of speeding points, he's effectively ended his Parliamentary career, 'cos it's very hard to see how he could ever expect to be reselected, never mind re-elected, after this, and he's almost certain to go to jail for a few months, maybe a year .... though it could be longer, and would have been had he maintained his not guilty stance and been convicted anyway.

And for what? Avoiding speeding points? Maybe a ban?

Moral of the tale? Don't lie to courts. Better yet, don't get caught speeding, and especially if your licence is at risk, never mind your career, don't faffin' speed in the first place . As I said .... what a moron.

A politician has commited a crime and lied about it? Shocking news indeed

For me, the shock is that he admitted it .... albeit at the last possible moment.

How foolish Chris Huhne has been. Every cloud has a silver lining though - what with Laws, Clegg etc. the LibDems are well and truly shot.

Government is trickier than shouting from the sidelines and the LibDems have shown themselves not to be ready for real work.

Re: Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

He is my MP (as from last year when I moved house)

With the possibility of a bye-election I made sure I was on the electoral register PDQ, although it has taken rather longer to come to court than I expected.

Pity in some ways as he has a reputation as a good constituency MP in taking up constituency causes.

Still, perverting the course of Justice is pretty serious, and I doubt he'll get much discount for a guilty plea as he entered it at the last possible moment.

Media attention has moved from his ex wife, although she has pleaded not guilty on the grounds of coercion. I would have thought that was more a mitigating circumstance rather than a defence, but then I am not a lawyer.

There's a fair amount of attention on how much his son hated him. See 4.05pm entry:

Makes for hard reading if you can emphasise with family relationship breakdowns.

Re: Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

Fairly standard legal tactic these days, used by every two bit criminal in the country, plead not guilty in the hope someone will screw up, not show up etc, then be rewarded with lenience when when you plead out knowing the judgement was going to go against you anyway, after wasting the time and money of a great many people. Hope he gets a proper sentence.

He'll probably end up being another Peter Mandleson or something like that. Slimy pieces of work, those politicians.

Re: Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

I've no doubt that once it blows over, there will still be plenty of money in it for him, lobying, advising etc. etc.

If he didn't make plenty on the side while he was an MP, I suspect he'll more than make up for the lack of MP salary now.

Without knowing what his lawyer advised/suggested throughout, I personally can't put the whole blame of the plea switch down to him alone.

Re: Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

One question I've not seen tabled/answered is how much money has he cost the tax payer with lies??? The cost of the investigation and subsequent planned prosecution must amount to a vast sum. The lying scum bag should be forced to pay a very large fine to cover some of it as well as going to jail.

Re: Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

At least £17,000 for his severance.

Did his 'apology' make anyone else want to stick their boot up his rear? Saw it on the news last night and all I heard was; I'm the big man for taking responsibility(once I was given no choice) and you're all silly and childish for bringing up the serious crimes I committed 10 years ago. No hint of remorse or guilt, seemed like the only thing he regretted was getting caught and got the impression he thought he was the victim in all this. Disgusting.

I very much doubt that his MP's salary bothers him much, the bloke is a multi-millionaire with, IIRC, a substantial property portfolio.

According to the Telegraph, the public purse has so far been tapped for about £250, 000 in legal costs, which he may well end up paying, in addition to £350, 000 for his own legal fees, though I've no idea where they get those figures. But, it seems, he can afford it.

As for any MP's severance package, well, we'll see what happens. It may well depend on the eventual sentence, but if under 12 months, then he could have remained, according to the rules, as an MP and continued to draw his salary, thereby getting some £150, 000 up to the next election, and if then defeated, would have been entitled to the same transition payment as any and every other losing MP.

Should he get a severance pay-out? In the circumstances, and IMHO, hell no. But, if he's got any common sense, and any concern for public opinion of him, he sure won't take it even if entitled to it. I certainly wouldn't take it, if in his shoes. But then, politicians are a breed apart, usually with a hide thick enough to make a main battle tank jealous, so anything is possible.

Re: Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

Pretty disgusted by the media storm over the texts with his son.

Asv a politician, he may be a liar and unprincipled, (and why lie over speeding points - even if disqualified he could afford train fares, taxis, even a chauffeur if he had been disqualified)

But I do feel a hint of sympathy over his estrangement with his son. The texts might have been pertinent to the case, but is it really in the public interest (as opposed to interesting to the public) to publish them in all their glory - including those that had no bearing on the case?

Re: Chris Huhne in shock change of plea

I have to agree with Saracen. Everyone speeds now and again, these days 2nd gear takes the car to 35 mph comfortably.

When the story broke in the media he should have put his hands up and said fair cop lads, it was me and it is something I shouldn't have done in hindsight. The public would not have cared. He would have got 3pts and a possible ban and we move on. There was clearly a witch hunt against him from someone either in LibDems or Conservatives.

    He has lost everything.

Moral of the story is: if you're gonna put points on your wife's licence, don't divorce her after.
