Is that crazy money for what will probably be a 30min appointment? Only been to dentist and orthodontist before, not one of these gum specialists.
I guess it's tough work, that 2nd yacht isn't going to buy itself![]()

Compare that with a solicitors fees.
Then look at the investment in equipment, and the training it takers to become a dentist (at least 5 years plus training to become a specialist) and the ongoing costs of running a practice.
(But I'll do it for you for £20! - but I should warn you that I'm not qualified for dentistry,)

I'll be happy if it's the standard price nationwide, just can't tell if that's reasonable
Technically,a dentist is surgeon so you need to consider that aspect.
Having said, dental care is actually quite expensive in the UK,and the provision of subsidised dental care is quite limited,ie,it is quite hard to find a NHS funded dental pratice.
Its probably why a lot of people don't visit the dentist regularly, and probably explains the trend in dental tourism for major work.
Don't know if this will be any help

Or another clinic

You might want to ask what is included in the initial examination, it may include X-rays.

Good grief, £110 just to look? thats verging on criminal.
Although, if non-NHS, it wouldnt surprise me.
The answer to your question is that while it very much depends on exactly what you're being quoted for, and by whom, and even where, it's not out of the ballpark.
A basic assessment (BPE) is a fairly superficial assessment, and is often done by a hygenist as part of a cleaning, and reviewed by a dentist. but a full assessment by a specialist is a different prospect. Just like, 10 minutes for a quick check with the practice nurse at your GP is a bit different from a full consultation with a cardiac surgeon.
I asked a dentist friend about this £110 fee, and his comment was, in short, "not surprised, I've seen higher, including £200."
Remember, it's a time-intensive process from a qualified expert than can only charge his time once. He's also in business, not simply out to provide a social service at the lowest cost, so if he can fill his time, he's likely to charge what the market will bear, and if one patient won't pay it, another will.
And, as long as it's a fixed fee not a charge per unit of time, then it's probably averaged to cover a simple case that takes 20 minutes and a more problematic one that takes an hour, because they can't know what they'll find until they start looking. And according to my dentist friend, it can sometimes take an hour.
So, be sure what you're getting for your £110, what's included and what isn't, but the overall comment is .... it's not out of the norm.

I have to say £110 is about the norm. The money you were paying for is for someone who is extensively and expensively trained in helping to manage for your gums. He/She probably gave you the diagnosis and some instructions on how to best manage your gums.
Also, you have to think about if your gums are that bad, what are the alternatives? If your gums are bad, its only a matter of time until the teeth become loose, and once they are loose, theres not much that can be done unless extraction.
And if you wanted the gaps filled, your talking either:
1 a denture, which can be incredibly difficult if not impossible to get on with. Dentures are a replacement for not having teeth, not a replacement for teeth. The best denture wearers only get about 25% of their jaw power.
2, implants, - a full arch can be upto £10-15k.
Teeth are precious things and once lost they are impossible to replicate with any type of prosthesis.
If you've got any questions, more than happy to give you my 2p.

Thanks for feedback, as long as it's ~norm, thats ok. Have booked appointment.
I'm due for some major trouble in the teeth area sooner or later as I was rubbish at taking care of my teeth when I was younger. And recently had inflamed gums.
Hope you get it sorted, without too much pain in your mouth or your wallet!
(Speaking as someone whose last visit to the dentist was about £450 - pity there isn't a gleaming smiley!)

I went to a guy in Solihull who was recommended, BUPA based - he's not cheap, but he is VERY good (you have to be referred though, and existing patients can do that).
I used to smoke, for around 11 years, usual bleeding gums after I gave up years ago - really really bad - I would bite a sandwich and the bread would be red
Two significant sessions (around 2hrs each) with 24 injections was £1,300. I now have to go every 6 months, for a check up and clean, £135 a time.
But I don't need any other dental work at all. Get this right and it makes a MASSIVE difference to you and your life... Don't avoid it if you have similar symptoms.
Please do not message me about Scan Free shipping, I no longer work for HEXUS.net
well just walk into the emergency dentist and he'll tell you if theres anything wrong .. then get him to sort it ..
really hate paying £50-200 for a tooth or a filling .. fook me not like there going to last forever ...girl in our work payed £1500 for caps and teeth sorting out .. 2 caps came off within 3 weeks .. it's all supply and demand .. and fleeceing the nhs and you ..
What does it matter now if men believe or no?
What is to come will come. And soon you too will stand aside,
To murmur in pity that my words were true

To see the wizard one must look behind the curtain ....
Not sure i fully agree with you. My thoughts are that if i have cleaned an area extensively and then after that they are brushing and flossing well, i will only need to do a very minor clean (normally the back of the lower front teeth) because the patient themselves are doing all the hard work for me by brushing and flossing well.

If someone comes into with emergency pain, that and only that is my priority. If they were to ask me if there was anything else wrong, i tell them that im just looking to get them out of pain and if they want a clinical examination for a diagnosis or anything else, to rebook for it.
