    Wink Job sites

    Dear Hexites

From your experiences, what are the best job sites to search for jobs ? i.e. Sites which you have found to be effective, where you had a larger % of calls from recruiters/agencies.

And, is there any tactic that you utilize ? I thought calling up the recruitment chap/lady after applying gave you an extra chance of making it, but I am yet to see results!

    Re: Job sites

personally i think they are all bollocks.

Get a lot of agents taking down your details, firing them off to several different employers, regardless of qualifications, experience or your chosen field and hoping for results.

other side of the coin is that they have a contract with a major (usually poor) employer with a high turnover that they feed the unemployed to for a short time.

Find an employer you want to work for, apply, hope

    rinse and repeat

then get headhunted when you are far too good for that job...

    i hope

    Re: Job sites

I've had a look at fish4 before but it just kept throwing 'National' jobs rather than jobs actually in my location to the top of the search, big waste of time. If you can find a sector/location specific website then that would be the best, something like the Cambridge Network (tech jobs near Cambridge).

As a smaller company we do use a recruitment agency who were pretty good for one role and struggling with a second (although send through plenty of CVs). It's not cheap for the company though!

    Re: Job sites

Use them all! But don't give out your CV before getting certain assurances, I copy them via email just to conferm. Obviously that means any of those "upload your CV here" types are out of the question.

Ultimately a lot of recruitment agencies have no idea about anything required for a candidate to do the job they are advertising for. They are there just to get as many people as possible to apply. That means if the job is window cleaning, they will just make it sound as luxurious as possible, without many hints at the idea of getting up at 6 am in freezing cold to wash windows until your hands go numb. Conversly if its for say a computer programmer, they will pick every buzzword and technology their know, including ones that are diametrically opposed.

If you do this, make sure your grammar is much better than this poster's.

It really depends on what industry you want work in. For IT stuff, I use monster, cwjobs, jobsite and jobserve (you can upload your CV to them for agents to search).

I also use the scattergun approach, but I work on a contract rather than perm basis. I figure that 90% of what I'll get back is dross, but the remaining 10% might be worth considering.

I try to use the gov jobsite but since the "upgrade" it's been crap, really hard to narrow searches down.

    Re: Job sites

I've just had experience using www.jobsite.co.uk, having just secured my new role (starting in 3 weeks time). What I found was uploading your CV gets you tons of agencies calling (I'd estimate I've had about 15-20 calls since Christmas) trying to match you to jobs. They are mostly futile, but some do hold interest. However I found my new role by searching the jobs on the site myself, and applying manually. In my profession (mechanical engineering / draughtsman) it seemed to offer a lot of positions all locally, so it was a rich resource for locating jobs, even allowing me to quite selective given the quantity presented. For that reason alone I think it's worth checking it out.

    Re: Job sites

I think it will depend a lot on what industry you're looking for jobs in. The best results I've had is through recommendations from other people I've worked with, of both good agents, and of actual jobs.

If feasible, look around for companies in your area/industry and check their websites for careers information. Even if they don't list job vacancies there, they should have an address to send your CV to, that's how I got my first job.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

    Re: Job sites

Doesn't offend me at all. In fact the lack of random apostrophes is quite refreshing!

If I was in a position to hire someone and their CV was presented as per your post though, it'd go straight in the bin. Just because you are dyslexic, it doesn't stop you having someone else review/amend your CV.

I appreciate that this is an Internet forum, however, and if I have offended you at all, I apologise.

    Re: Job sites

I found that none will respond to you or get back to you so don't rely on them seeing your CV when you send it.

    - If you want to be noticed send your CV around 7:30 to 8:30am so it will be on top of the list when the recruiter starts work in the morning.
    - Look at the ad and find the name of the person that's recruiting for the role you want, ring the offices no later than 10am and ask to speak to that person by first name only as full names imply you don't know them, if asked explain it's a follow up call don't mention the job/role but make it sound like you have already been in contact with the recruiter or someone will end up taking your number with the promise of a call back.
    - When you speak to the recruiter find out if he has got the CV you sent, discuss what you want from the role and find out if he is going to forward your CV, then if he is ask when you can call back and note the date
    - Call back when you said you would and find out what happened and what other roles the recruiter is dealing with, always end calls having agreed when you can call him.
    - Persistent pestering will either have the recruiter warming to you and doing more to help or getting annoyed with you and helping you to get rid of you, either way you will win like this, the sitting on the edge of a mountain with your mouth open and waiting for a cooked duck to fly in approach doesn't work.
