    Child 'functionally cured' of HIV

Seems we're moving ever closer to the end of this terrible disease. A cure for HIV is one of those things I genuinely thought I'd never see in my lifetime, with this and the so called Berlin Patient. Still a long way to go, obviously, but sometimes, it's great being wrong.

A two-year-old child born with HIV infection and treated with antiretroviral drugs beginning in the first days of life no longer has detectable levels of virus using conventional testing despite not taking HIV medication for 10 months, according to findings presented today at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Atlanta.

This is the first well-documented case of an HIV-infected child who appears to have been functionally cured of HIV infection—that is, without detectable levels of virus and no signs of disease in the absence of antiretroviral therapy.

I'm not sure if this is good news. Humans are already out of control. Natural selection is non-existent by now, which means a degrading gene pool. not to mention the already unsustainable population levels and the ever rising pollution of our mud ball.

Indeed, and once we cure one terrible disease, something far worse will come about.

You'd almost think nature was trying to destroy us for our hubris.

Feel free to step up and take one for the team.
No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.

Heard this on R4 this morning. Cure is probably overstating it - but great news nonetheless. It sounds as if the mothers immune system in combination with early doses of anti-virals seems to have worked. Whilst happy for the baby, I just can't see how this helps us in the search for a vaccine or cure.
