Chewing gum ban? I hope so.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ewing-gum.html

I really hope the group lobbying for the introduction of this ban is successful. If a ban could be introduced in just one UK town there is a chance it could be adopted in others. I hate, loathe and detest seeing chewing gum all over our pavements and shopping centre floors. I've always thought that it would be a good idea to heavily tax chewing gum so that some revenue could be generated to pay for cleaning up the mess. In my local town, Carlisle, the council used to have teams of workers cleaning the stuff up but that has now stopped, no doubt because of the cost, and the mess is unbelievable.

If I wanted to live in Singapore I'd move there.

Re: Chewing gum ban? I hope so.

I'd fiercely oppose a ban, partially because I am quite capable of using chewing gun in the manner intended and of disposing of it in an appropriate way, but also the inherent presumed guilt such a ban presupposes. You are chewing gum, so you obviously chucked it on the floor. I'd also oppose a tax on it as well, for the very same reasons.

What I would (and do) support is the enforcement of the existing laws we have for littering (which it is).

I entirely agree about the mess it causes in the street, but chewing gum does have its positive side

It should be if youre caught spitting it on the ground not chewing it, that to me is way to draconian (it should be the same for people who think throwing cigarette butts on the ground is acceptable).

Seemingly standard practice nowadays; ban something because the authorities fail to enforce existing laws.

Or more to the point, ban something because no one is expected to have any responsibility these days, be it the general public or the authorities.

So should we ban driving then since some idiots drink and drive or drive dangerously, I really cannot support a view like this as its so retarded! Its silly, end of.

Re: Chewing gum ban? I hope so.

Or, rather than needlessly depriving everyone of yet another thing because a few people lack self-control, put more effort into encouraging people to not do it (has worked fairly well for dog poo) and switch to something biodegradable?

Banning should only be used when absolutely necessary, unfortunately nowadays it's often used on completely idiotic stuff like this, to remove more and more freedoms. I strongly disagree on both the subject and the principal.

@TeePee: Ironically, people who want firearms to commit crime can, of course, get hold of them just as easily as before. Banning generally harms everyone *but* the people it's intended for...

Banning chewing gum is silly. Why ban it because some people spit it on the ground.

Like others have said, should we also ban crisps, cigarettes as I often find a packet of walkers blowing about my garden or fag ends all over the floor.

I am well aware. I'm the resident gun nut. I was making the point that this dovetails very neatly into the gun control debate. Should everyone be banned from owning something just because a few can't be trusted?

Guns, chewing gum, alcohol, religion, all have a negative effect on society when miss-used. But banning people from doing something because a few can't be trusted with it is not a free society.

It would be interesting to see how well it works. In my town they had a big clear up and it was surprising to see how quickly it got bad again.

There should more enforcers on the street with video evidence/ DNA evidence if they deny it. Together with stronger penalties. Look at Singapore for example where they have banned Chewing gum, so much cleaner
