Selling houses is such a pain!

I have a completion date of November 5th... after my house was put on the market in April, and spent a total of about 3 weeks up for sale.

Timewasting first buyers strung me along for 5 weeks without any kind of contact or returning calls, second buyers said they were ready to go (renting in the interim) but managed to hire the world's dumbest solicitor and use the slowest mortgage lender in the world.

Very lucky I didn't need the money from the sale to move here as I've been here about 10 weeks now!
But it will be nice to have my moolah finally! I can then go out and buy a car

Better news was the letter from the UK tax people giving me £850 back - much quicker than I expected to have it!

Weird thing is I can't change the address on my drivers licence, as you can only put a UK one, but it is still valid for another 8 years - and they can't erase my old address from their database either.
And while I can legally drive on my UK licence here, they can't give me any points on it

Fun, but be carefull. I worked in Nottingham Magistrates court on pretty much exactly this. If they couldn't find an equivalent of the points system for a foreign drivers offence, they'd just bung it straight into the court system instead, so automatic court appearance for every speed camera offence. And in the absense of points, they're likely to give out heftier fines if Uk residents. If they were on holiday I belive it got a bit complicated and the buck was passed to the offenders local courts to deal with.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Actually I'm a very sedate driver, had my licence 12 years and ne'er a point on it.
    *touch wood*

If I commit any traffic offences over here, it'll be because I can't read the signs or do something that I would never contemplate as illegal... like parking with your offside nearest the pavement - apparently that's illegal in a big way here.

Oh, and apparently it's vehicles, not drivers, that are insured here, so I have no idea if have "full" no claims bonus from the UK makes a blind bit of difference to my premiums.

Is that so you can only park on the same side of the road you are driving on or something?

Yeah, so all the traffic on either side of the road faces the same way - in the direction of the flow.

I got asked in a very vocal way by my girlfriend what the hell I thought I was doing when I was parking up (pulling across the road) to grab a takeaway pizza - the look of absolute horror on her face was classic

U-turns are perfectly legal and commonly used, you have to have the correct types of tyres for winter & summer in the correct months, and virtually every street has a day of the week dedicated to cleaning/snow sweeping and if you leave your car there it gets a ticket (and possibly buried in snow heh).

I feel SO sorry for any first time buyers, the housing market has gone truly silly
I take it there's been no sudden down-turn in the last few months?
