Help with parcel prices to US, if anyone could confirm my own findings.

Hi, sorry another 'help with parcel prices' type thread, but just need to check/confirm my own findings in a bit of a hurry..

Basically I'm sending a 5kg+ (will be a max 7/8kg box, about 36cm square-ish) parcel to the US, so can't use Royal Mail surface rate; have checked the service I usually use and round a fair few other providers, and all come out at around the £35-40 mark for an express type service. Are there any cheaper alternatives if speed is not an issue? As I say I have done my own researches honest, but it's always worth asking in case someone already has an alternative up their sleeve from personal experience. Ta.

Thanks, comes out at around £41, so that seems to be the average. I did get it down to the lower 30s with another bulk firm so will probably have to go with that, still express service though, there seems not to be a 'slow & cheap' option from what I can find.

    Thanks anyway.

Have you looked at seeing if you can send it via boat? as ridiculous as it sounds.

Not that ridiculous, after all the basic principle of surface mail is road/rail/sea, however there doesn't seem to be much scope in that line outside of Royal Mail. Even if I split my parcel into surface-mail sized chunks, which I could, it would come out no cheaper as RM surface rates are around £14 for 2 kg. Not sure how else you'd get it onto a boat though there may be an inventive way! But maybe best not get too unorthodox where someone else's stuff is involved.
    DIY option?.. ..maybe not

Ought to be a service to fill this you'd think, though maybe it simply doesn't pay/isn't practical or enough call, there are a fair lot of mentions (when searching) of a former USPS surface mail service that got discontinued, leaving US senders looking for an equivalent also without much joy apparently.

Anyway I am more or less committed to the option I mentioned above, but would be interested in any other choices for future reference.
